It definitely seems to like the 45-55MPH range assuming you don't have hills or use cruise control but with mixed driving it all seems to be a wash. I've had an 07, 12 and now a 16 and the numbers haven't seemed to vary much with essentially 50-50 city/highway driving.

Yep! Kind of a bummer. Why did they bother changing the motor? I guess the 3.5 is quieter. 55mph would be great if we were living in 1956...

That's pretty much what I've seen so far with mine. Unfortunately most of my driving is 65+. I'll be interested to see what happens when we are back to summer fuel and it warms up. So far its been pretty much the same as what my 2005 got and in some instances worse. The transmission has figured itself out finally (over 6,000 miles as of today) which has helped quite a bit.

I've got a 2016 Tacoma with the Off-road package, V6, 6 speed auto, factory rubber with about 1200 miles now. I drive mostly rural and according to the dash today, only got 15.8mpg. When I took it on the highway last weekend, running at 65mph, only got 17.7mpg. I know it's a truck & mileage is always going to be low, but this is getting lower than my old 4wd Ram with the 5.9 and 4 speed auto by about 1mpg. Tires are running 35psi, truck is waxed, windows are up, it chooses the gear, I do, whatever, nothing improves it. How are some of you guys squeezing that kind od mpg out of yours? But loving the truck, feels sure footed and like it could handle whatever comes at it.

I've got the same truck. Give it some time. I was getting the same you are and now I'm up about 2. The transmission seems to shift more intelligently after about 3000 miles or so (others have agreed). I've got about 6200 on mine as of today. My last tank averaged 18.8 with the cruise set at 75 - I filled up and drove til it was near empty. Doing this same thing right after I got it averaged me 15.6.

I have the same truck and I have not noticed any improvement due to any "Break In" ...that is mostly a fallacy.

Yep, my first tank was my best tank for awhile back 10 years ago when it was new. Expecting a 2-3 mpg gain after a mythical break-in ain't gonna happen. 0.1 mpg maybe.

I had a 2014 4x2 4.0 2nd Gen and if I drove at a constant 65 mph I would get 21 mpg on the freeway for the whole tank.My 3rd gen trd sport 4X2 3.5 doing the same gets 27 mpg, that's not bad.If you drive hard or live in a hilly area it's gonna use practically the same as the 2nd gen because it will never be in Atkinson cycle. Just installed trd pro 17 inch wheel and bfg ko2's 265 70 17 and they knocked it down 3mpg or so on the freeway.
