Differential lock on 2WD

    can someone explain how this is different than LSD? when i was in my 20's i put a 4:56 LSD (back then called posi-traction) in my 59 chevy. added a pair of slicks and drove for ever like that. why is it that the system in the tacos you can't go over 5mph and can not drive around town with it on? for all you in snow country do you drive on snowy roads with it on?

    There is an Auto LSD and a rear differential locker which is for extreme situations. AUTO LSD is on all the time

    diff lock is a solid coupler, like a spool. Go around a corner and the inside tire is going to bind. Do this on pavement, and you could break an axle. LSD is not a solid coupler. The inside tire can spin slower around a corner.

    There's two totally different things here....and WAY too much to explain it.

    You should do some research on LOCKERS and LIMITED SLIPs. A Huge difference between the two.

    Lockers are NO SLIP - full, 100% traction at the wheels - gears are engaged and will never disengage unless you break them.

    Limited Slips are LIMITED - If the torque applied to the gears are too great, the gears will disengage until ideal torque levels are reached.

    Lockers should only be used in extreme conditions. Toyota limits the usage of the TRD Locker to only in 4WD and 4LO range only.

    It should also be mentioned at the auto lsd in the tacoma is a computer driven abs based system that brakes the slipping wheel to help transfer the torque back to the grip wheel via an open diff. There is no mechanical parts at play. So over a certain speed the brakes would over heat and cause damage. I have overheated my lsd in the snow and it turned off.
