Do you have a link to the recommended grease?

 

This is what I used.

$9 Valvoline Multi-Vehicle High Temperature Red Grease 14.1 OZ Cartridge

These come pregreased from Spicer from Spicers factory. If you had the same amount of grease in the Cardons that you have when you added your 5-7 pumps, you'd blow the cap and needle bearings square off before installing them.

 

Wondering if lack of grease had anything to do with the catastrophic failure of my front driveline?

 

Had mine greased today, all bone try.

Had the u-bolts torqued too, they were pretty loose.

I'll probably do this myself down the road, just been slammed.

 

This is true but why not install them, then add grease before leaving the factory?

Because that costs Toyota money

 

Might not need that much. That initial grease is probably good for the first 50,000 miles. Remember, more isn't always better.

Are you talking about the grease Spicer puts on for shipping/storage purposes only; that they themselves say, is not enough for proper lubrication?

Yeah I just read that now. However it does say replacement kits. Not the Full on drive shafts from the factory.

 

The lack of grease is right there with the lack of mudflaps! Cheap

 

I'm really happy my OR didn't come with factory mudflaps, those things are pretty hideous.

 

When installing a new u joint it's best to pack the caps full, install the joint then install the zerk. The excess grease will come out the zerk hole and the joint will be full, no damage to the seals. When you grease just pump until you see small beads of grease on seal. Do not over grease.

 

Assembly grease won't be enough to properly lubricate the joint until it's next service. Say the Toyota tech misses it then, now you're going 30k miles on a barely lubricated joint. It might not grenade, but it sure isn't going to last much longer.

 

Again, the notes say that's just for replacement packs, not fully done drive shafts. So I can't comment on whether the fully assembled drive shafts are or aren't fully lubricated.

In this thread, JeffLange confirmed driveshafts are assembled by Toyota and supposedly greased during assembly.
The point is, they're not getting greased after assembly, which is what matters. Me and the majority of folks in this thread who have put a grease gun on a 2016 can comment.

 

I did admit I was not sure whether they are or are not lubricated. Now I know.



If it's any consolation I can tell you you'll know way in advance if your cardon is going to grenade.
