So beeping in 4L is no good. That's not good at all. I was stuck while in 2wd and was trying to select 4L. I'll give it another try. Thanks

Wait, you never got it in 4hi, either?

Don't go into park to shift to 4lo from 4hi. Just stop, push into neutral, and switch to 4lo. Same for going back into 4hi. 2hi to 4hi and back can be done while moving

It was a lot easier in the old days with a transfer case shift lever instead of the dial mixed in the HVAC dials.

It doesn't give the tactile feedback of feeling the gear engaged, which might be why some people drive off in the wrong one.

What?? You should definitely use 4wd in snowy, icy conditions, anyone saying otherwise is crazy

you are overthinking it, just leave in 4high or 2high in these situations, and drive sensibly

Manual 4wd sucks. Who wants to start, stop, start, stop every time they want to go in and out of 4wd

Manual 4wd and manual lever actuation of "shift-on-the-fly" are two completely different things. My old Broncos required stopping, my Cherokees, Grand Cherokee and 90's US pickups did not. All had manual transfer case levers.

You don't have to unless you're using old school automatic hubs. Toyota hasn't done that since the 80's. Both ADD and manual hubs allow shift on the fly regardless of whether you're turning a little switch or pulling a handle.

Interesting. Pulling the handle on any domestic I've driven is like trying to shift a Manual with no clutch

    Exactly
Same on most other 4wd's since the late 70's in the US

You need to release the throttle, and since mine have all been manuals, I've also dis-engaged the clutch...but never had to stop or slow down to go from 2hi to 4hi. Did it again 3 times today with the little twist switch, just don't have the same feel that its happening until its done. I use 4wd about 90 days a year I suppose, for nearly 50 years now. Newer ones are smoother, seldom stronger

Ford especially seems to like those stupid spring loaded auto hubs. Toyota offered both ADD and automatic briefly, 88 and 89 I think. I've personally changed a couple of those old automatic trucks over, one to manual and the other to ADD (wasn't my truck). On the couple of big Fords I've had I've opted for manual hubs, wouldn't have bought them otherwise. The back up to release is just dumb.

I like my old ford manual hubs, instead of lock-unlock, it was lock-auto. So if the automatic ADD quit working you could still lock it in manually

Out to the airport this morning to pick up our new puppy. With the recent snow cover on the highway it was nice to be able to shift on the fly to 4WD. It has someone said the only way to deal with icy/snowy road conditions. Just never go to cruise control on snowy, icy or wet pavement. I crossed a frost covered bridge on one trip while on cruise control - highway was dry - 4Runner was sideways instantly. Fortunately there was no oncoming traffic and I got it straightened out. lesson learned.
