really though, the DI motors should be able to inject fuel THROUGH the entire power stroke right? similar to diesel motors

They do to an extent. Along with ignition timing, fuel timing can be adjusted

micro-timing at the actual power cycle, pretty cool....i.e. fuel can be injected through the power cycle after both valves are closed

I understand the purpose of higher octane. In some engines it is simply a waste of money Having said that, if someone sayse 93 octane gives their truck more power, I believe them. If someone says 93 octane gives them better fuel economy, I believe them.

I have not tried an octane above 87, but I have tried pure gas. My first two tanks were pure gasoline and I recorded my best fuel economy 24 mpg both tanks. After 3200 miles, I just filled up with real gas... my engine is very smooth and quiet with more pep.

Mini rant: A lot of cars around here that I know of suffer a 10% reduction in fuel economy with crapanol gas. Seems close to that for my Tacoma. I would prefer to pay for 1 gallon of gas and recieve .9 gal. You would travel just as far and have more power doing it. We pay for .1 gal of ethanol that doesn't do a damn thing except cause soil erosion and starve some little kid in Africa. Biggest wasteful scam ever crammed down the American taxpayer's throat.

Screws up the price for my cattle to, snefo. Corn alcohol belongs in liquor, by god, not in gasoline. Am I right? Hell yeah.

I just rock 87, because that's what the manual says, and this isn't a performance engine. Although I do only run shell and chevron gas.

My Si was 91 or higher and I rocked 93 because racecar. Lol the Si has a high compression ratio, and the knock sensors to crazy if anything less is ran.

But I honestly don't think higher octane gas really does anything in the Tacoma, its programmed and tuned for 87, anything higher is honestly just a waste of money.

I started out running 87, then switched to 89, and currently using 91. On my Fronty I noticed better MPG's with 91, but later switched back to 87 and stuck with that since the MPG's weren't that significant. Even had a Bully Dog and programmed it to be optimized for 87, later pulled the Bully Dog and sold it. I always use Chevron or Shell depending on what's closer or cheaper. In the past, Shell was more expensive, but lately I've been seeing Shell cost less than Chevron most places.

FTR I run 89, just because I love my truck. Maybe it does something? Maybe it doesn't? Probably doesn't, but I want my truck to know it's the only truck for me, so I spoil it. It makes me feel good at least.

Also, my 2nd gen had to have a higher octane else it had serious valve rattle. Nothing you can do can change the valve rattle on the new 2GR-FKS. It's just gonna rattle like an old diesel engine frequently due to the valve cleaning cycle. Just learning to love the sound of theoretical increased engine life. Though I have been noticing the looks SF gives the truck when I rattle my way up to the gate every morning. They notice it more than I do.

    Side story:

When I was a kid my dad put a little diesel engine in a hack-job pickup assembled from the corpses of 2 Ford Couriers and a Mazda b2200. He had to rig a toggle switch for the glow plugs and he didn't have a front bumper so he fabbed one up out of angle iron and rattlecanned it competition orange. I felt like Dad was Dr Frankenstein and the truck was his masterpiece. It rattled like crazy. On the inaugural test drive, a rat's nest, complete with litter and mother, fell onto my sister's bare feet and she nearly leaped from the moving truck. Because of the rats and rattles, we affectionately nicknamed that old truck "Rat-atat-tat." It was mostly white and had a minor lift (probably from some sort of rigged suspension my dad had lying around), and my new white truck reminds me of ol Rat-atat-tat whenever it hits its valve cleaning cycle. We beat the hell out of that thing and it never quit.

Then the idiot Dad sold it to scrapped it the day after he bought it because he forgot about the glow plug toggle switch under the dash and couldn't get it to start. Tragedy.

Anyway, thinking about maybe putting a decal of a rat on the back windshield as a tribute to the first compact pickup truck I ever rode in.

My vote is for what the manual says, 87 octane, but I do put in top tier for the detergent. I have owned many luxury imports and ran 87 octane with no negative effects to hp, mpg or knocking. First time I am following the manual on recommended fuel, I agree with the video posted by Snowman. Good luck finding gas without ethanol in Iowa!

I do remember the old 3MZ engine that Toyota used in several vehicles...including some in Lexus lineup. It was originally designed for 91 or higher octane. But people grumbled (mainly Sienna owners) and they revamped the engine management to tolerate 87. But the manual stated that..."for increased performance the use of 91 octane or higher is recommended". But that was years ago.

Agree with some others on here - if you want to spend a little more on gas for better performance/efficiency and you do this by purchasing a higher octane then you're doing it wrong. Just use 100% gas and keep the ethanol out of your truck.
