Sounds like you are still suffering from a low fluid condition . Gotta wonder if the dealer actually filled your transmission using the proper procedure when they topped it off or skipped a couple steps to save time . As you can see from the many members within this post who had their transmissions topped up, it almost pays to sit at the dealership and make sure they do it correctly . As much as I hate to say it , check it yourself so you know it is done correctly .

Do you need to know, or care?
Just wanted to update after having tranny topped up yesterday at dealer. No lag this morning at all, reverse to drive was solid, so it looks like the fluid did the trick.

If the drum brakes caused this second gen would have the same issues. All my Rangers were drums out back and none of them ever clunked into gear.

So just out of curiosity, are the people having the problem also those that haven't experienced good MPG? I am wondering if it is somehow related. It is very cold in the mornings here like teens - 20s and I haven't noticed it from rev to drive in the last week or so. But I do notice like a transmission flare going from like 2nd to third. Taking it very easy on the gas, it takes a long time to shift and rpms go up as it is shifting up. When I read the notice about the 4cl it sounded a lot like what I am experiencing. As far as MPG, I reset the computer and then drove 60 miles with the CC set at 62 the whole way (all highway no traffic,) then did the same drive a different night with the CC at 65 and can't get over 20 on that trip.

I have this issue and also have an issue where the RPMs jump up and down at idle. Left it at the dealership and just heard they'll be opening a case with Toyota and bringing in some techs. More info when I hear it...

Yes mine was low and on the 2nd visit and complaint they added fluid.
It seemed to fix the issue but it's back again.
Kind of a pain to leave it over night so I will keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse.

    Shifting seems fine to me.

Mine is doing exactly this. It started of where I thought I didn't give it enough time to engage into drive after backing up but yesterday it did it after I was backing out of a parking spot and almost hit the car next to me when it revved up then lunged forward after hesitating engaging into drive! I have also experienced the slip going around a corner at low throttle.

No offense but I am glad someone else is having that part of the problem as well. I guess I thought this was the complaints everyone was having with the new transmission but I think mine (and yours) might be having a little bit different issue.

Took mine into the dealer, they claim it is the ABS preventing power from getting applied after it stops the rollback. They did check the fluid level.

Took mine to the dealer after reading this thread. He was hesitant to just check the fluid level so after a rental car and testing the truck cold in the morning, they added 1 quart to the trans. (it was low) Cold morning reverse to forward hesitation is gone and mine was pretty bad. Subtle driving latency is also gone.

Did your dealer take your word for it, and make the check or did they replicate the issue to confirm there was a problem before going forward with the troubleshooting?

Took mine in; they found nothing off with fluid levels but did notice the problem (and the RPM jump). Opened a case with toyota and reflashed my ECU. Told me to bring it back in if I can still notice the issue, as they couldn't after the reset.

I'm sure that didn't fix the issue but it's nice knowing they are taking it so seriously.

My dealer says they checked the fluid and it wasn't low...they "couldn't replicate the problem" so I may have to leave it overnight. Mine takes a moment to go into drive when its cold. I guess I will have to go back again...sigh

You described the issue that I experience as if you have driven my truck. This provides me some relief that I am not crazy but, I'd like to find the cause. I also occasionally experience what I'll refer to as transmission "slipping" when taking off from a dead stop.

I reported the issue to my dealer and took the truck in for inspection. The technician explained (not sure that I buy his explanation) that the traction assist causes the brakes to grab when the truck is stopped on an incline. My streets are fairly crowned and after backing out of my driveway and transitioning to 'D' my front bumper is much lower than the rear bumper. He went on to explain that the brakes will hold until the tires gain traction thus causing a "bump" feeling when the brakes release.

Don't kill the messanger on this one. Can someone chime in, is this anti-knowledge or can this be a valid cause.......

Tocame not sure thats the same but I think the Hill Assist kicked on when I was offroad this past weekend. I was on a steep incline, took foot off brake and for whatever reason I hesitated before applying throttle and when I finally did I could see an orange traction light flicker on the dash and heard a clicking noise.

Having the RPMs go up before it clunked in though wouldn't explain traction control unless one wheel was spinning.

I doubt very much that is the traction assist. I took it to the dealer as well and they found nothing wrong with it, they could not replicate the issue. Most the people what i see that have had the problem have seen the problem get better by adding ATF, some have seen the problem persists after adding the ATF so it is hit and miss. I am just hoping Toyota will address this soon!

Making major (educated) assumptions here, but let's just all agree to move past the idea that ABS or traction control is the cause. Pretty sure there has to be wheel slip before either of these kick in, and I'm in slight disbelief a dealer can even attribute traction control to gear shifting incidents. With 99% certainty, this is entirely a tranny issue since it has all the symptoms of tranny slippage.

Moreover, I would strongly consider/advise 2016 Tacoma owners to leave out the detail that "this occurs on an incline" to the Toyota techs when you take it in. To me, it sounds like this problem occurs outside of that scenario, however, the issue is exacerbated on inclines.

0.02, take it or leave it :)

Nothing to do with incline or ABS on mine. It is a slipping issue. Smitty, Dealer did not take my word for it. Had to leave it overnight. They were unable to replicate but checked the tranny fluid level and found it to be low. 1 week later and I have had no more slipping when cold (rev to forward) and the strange engagement delay going downhill or while coasting is gone too. My theory is still the tranny was topped off before the added cooler and lines so when the oil populated, the overall level went down. 1 quart would be about right. Guys, maybe try filming the event over the course of a couple days. Might be enough to have it checked out.
