Someday you might be old. Getting old is the only option other than dying.

Only if there is a police report. Hit a deer several years ago with another truck did some major damage. When I sold the truck they run a car fax report ,it did not show. They get their information from police reports on accidents. Any accident no matter how small means you are screwed when you sell the vehicle because the report is often vague about details.

    Correcting some misconceptions.

The Police Report has zero to do with Carfax. Nothing. Police departments have no reporting tool thru the Carfax database. Not sure where you heard that but it's not true. Body shops have databases that interface with Carfax.

While any accident that shows up on your VIN in Carfax may have some impact on the value of your vehicle, there's certainly a huge difference between a $200 tap on your bumper and a $12,000 repair that was done after a major collision. If it's a private sale, show them a copy of your repair estimate. If it's a trade-in, or sale to a car buying service like CarMax, they'll walk around your vehicle with a digital paint gauge and can tell the body panels that have been repaired by measuring the depth of your paint. A simple bumper cover repaint won't bother them but if they see you've had your hood, fender, and door all repainted, yeah, that's going to matter.

Then how do you explain accidents that happen with major damage and no Carfax report. Guess shops don't always report them.

    Does insurance companies report them?

Because the system is only as good as the body shop data that gets input. Just like any business, you have shops on top of things and shops that aren't.

Guess I have been lucky. Had a couple accidents with animals that almost totaled my vehicle and no Carfax.
