+3 good call and with that report you can tell if the owner was a car LOVER or a car KILLER:eek: plus, you can tell on any test drive if that truck is TIRED or TIGHT. I'll tell you this, Will, I gave mine the utmost care its whole life. It fires right up, NO tapps, NO exhaust tics, smooth idle like a giant Hoover:D and crisp behavior driving. At 76,000 miles. That's a good start for expectations when you get out there:)

Tough call. Good luck man. Shop long and hard, try Craig's list, there's always some on there for sale by owner.

i did a little figuring today after looking at my lease.........i was wrong before when i said i can get outta my lease for $390..........its more like $1240. but i did talk to the service advisor who i work with all the time, and she says that with the evident trouble i have been having, they should be able to work with me on ending the lease early. we shall see. its definitely gonna take some time, but hopefully, all wont end bad.

first of all why would you lease in the first place? is it cheaper? i have the 4 door 4x4 and my monthly payments are only 5 bucks more a month than yours. i'm not trying to be a dick, i'm genuinly curious as to why you would lease.

secondly. since it is a lease, dump it and get a 1st gen. i'm a HUGE fan of 1st gens. i love greenbeans truck and tigerfan00 has a really badass 1st gen. i say go for it!

yeah.....gonna take some time man. i dont have $1240 laying around right now, so hopefully......the dealership will help me out some.

to answer your question as to why i leased...............when i traded my f150.....i was way the hell upside down...$9700 worth:eek:. to keep my payments to where they were with the ford, i kinda had to do a lease, as i couldnt afford a $565 or so monthly payment, so the lease fit at the time. i was actually gonna buy outta the lease, but with the repetitive problems i ahve been having, i have ultimately decided against it. so far....i have paid $12,300 for my damn prerunner, and because of the shitty ass lease, if i continue, i'll make $420. 05 a month payments for the next year and a half, until jan. 2010, then if i had bought the truck, i'd owe something like $12,300 or so. i sure as hell aint gonna end up paying $35k for a damn $25k truck, but im gonna stay with toyota because i love the tacoma. just gotta work out my shit right now.

thanks :D i suppose that earns some rep

will...as far as finding a good 1st gen you like thats worthwhile...definately take your time...its gonna be pretty tough im betting...i got mine in 05 when the new ones had just come out...i found mine at the carmax in charlotte on the DAY it was put online and had it shipped to columbia...i paid under blue book and the truck was like it was off the showroom floor...it took me 6 months of test driving and looking everywhere in the state before i found that truck

i was in the market for a tacoma...i wasnt sure on 1st or 2nd gen...but ultimately ive been INCREDIBLY happy...i see all these TSBs and issues that the 2nd gen guys run into...and im glad i dont have to go thru any of that...also on the plus side...with the 1st gens...theres a ton more aftermarket stuff for them and its cheaper too...and a larger used market for the first gen parts

how many 2nd gen guys could have their trucks modded to the point mine is for under 2 grand? not many :D

even with higher mileage...these trucks are very reliable...

knock on wood the ONLY issue ive had with mine was when i coated the alt with mud...its time for a timing belt and water pump...but im not a preventative maint type of guy (sorry tangent)

anyways...if you switch...i think you'll still be happy...and you'll be able to enjoy it just as much if not more

after re-reading this thread some more things id like to mention

im not a small guy, though not a big guy either...6'2 200lbs...i have plenty of room and dont feel like im in a sports car...ive driven my truck with my leo gear on...i still fit fine...another plus of the size is that if you drop something...theres a good chance you can reach it without getting out...even if its by the other door...

as far as towing is concerned...ive towed a samurai on toy axles on a heavy trailer out of the tenn. mountains...and it handled it fine...i had to leave a little extra room for braking and i needed to get on the gas a bit to get going...however it handled fine...

value...i bought my truck for under $20K in 2005...blue book was right at $21K i think...

its still worth over $10K and i owe much less than that :D

Good Luck and feel free to bring any possibilities here for us to review

no problem...i dont proclaim to be a truck guru...however i do know my experience...and i know its been nothing but good

plus getting a 1st gen with 4x4 you'll be on the right side of the fence in the 4x4/prerunner debate and you'll see what we've been trying to say for so long

me and the wifey had a good ol argument about the whole thing. she thinks im just gonna go and end the lease and get somethign else, but it just dont work like that. she also thinks its gonna hurt our credit by ending the lease early......though if i made the early termination fee.....i dont see how it could. its turning into a damned headache, and i aint even done anything yet........just thinking about it!!!

Will you could just about have that lease terminated just on problems alone! I understand your Wife's frustration-does she see how the current situation is actually hurting you-and that a lease is bad business for your end? Leases are only good for fleeting companies. The sooner you get rid of that monkey the sooner you can recover your losses:)

im really hoping to get rid of it, gotta go talk to a loan officer for 1-seeing if it will be possible to get another loan from them, and seeing if since we want to get a big house loan in the near future, if it will be feasible. and 2- the wife wants to make damn sure it aint gonna hurt our credit, because we do have pretty good credit and dont wanna screw it up. she understands that its actually hurting us in the long run, but she's just worried about the whole thing.

im still gonna go to the dealership and see what they say about ending the lease early since i keep on having problems.

Sorry to hear of your problems, I wanted an 04 dc 4x4 trd but could not find one, watch out for the penalties on breaking the lease. Don't limit yourself to your truck, maybe find a new one, maybe your's was just a lemon, maybe another brand. Keep an open mind.

Gotta agree with you and the others on the 1st gen 4x4's. My first was a '98 Extra Cab that was as close to bullet proof as you're ever likely to come across, and my second, the one I'm now driving, is an '03 Double Cab that is one sweet piece of equipment!

All but one of the Toyota pickups I've owned (the '03 I now drive is my fifth) have been 4x4's. The very first Toyota I owned was a 1964 Toyota Stout 4x2 that I bought new from the dealer. It was as I recall the first year Toyota offered a pickup for sale here in the States, a great little spartan version of a truck with a 1.9L 85hp engine, and I loved it! It was larger than the Datsun (Nissan) that was also available at the time, and that's why I got it.

From there I moved away from Toyotas into a '68 Ford pickup to pull a travel trailer with, and as the early '70s rolled around into a 4x4 International Scout with a V8 and all the options. After driving the Scout back and forth to work for years as a leo I finally got back into Toyotas with an '87 2.4L 4x4 pickup. That was followed by a '92 2.4L 4x4, then the '98 3.4L v6 4x4 that I recently sold, and the '03 Double Cab 4x4 that I now drive.

So, a great big YES to the 4x4 option! You can, if you shop carefully, find a private party to buy from where getting into a super Gen 1 Tacoma 4x4 will be almost like putting money in the bank compared to what it would cost to go through a dealer and buy a new or near new truck.

The Gen 1 Tacomas are every bit the truck that the larger more expensive Gen 2's are, so treat yourself right and put some of that hard earned money back into your own pocket instead of the bank's!
