I think the compression is kind of high for 87. I find when I run 87, the engine feels sluggish and I get a tank avg of 18.5 mpg. When I run 89 or higher, the engine runs smoother, is more responsive and my tank average goes to 19.5 to 20 mpg.

The engine is going to run at optimal levels with the factory recommend fuel.

The old 1GR had this tidbit .

    1GR- FE engine—
    Unleaded gasoline, Octane Rating 87
    (Research Octane Number91) or higher.
    For improved vehicle performance,
the use of premium unleaded gasoline
with an Octane Rating of 91 (Research
    Octane Number 96) or higher
    is recommended.

The new 2GR has this tidbit.

    Octane rating
(Unleaded gasoline) 87 (Research octane number 91) or higher

All modern engines advance timing as far as possible while compensating for detonation. By putting higher octane in you simply allow the ECU to push the timing further than it would with regular 87 octane.

It makes little difference obviously as the engine was designed around 87 octane but there's cause for running 89 to 91 on a highway jaunt with lots of hills where power is tested.

I personally wont be running premium unless I plan on leaving the city but I don't blame anyone for using one fuel or the other. As long as they understand what it does.

There is an optimal timing advance for every engine. The ecu has no reason to pass that. So the factory will find the correct fuel to reach optimal timing. Going for a higher octane rating then recommended will do nothing.

UNLESS for some reason they can not reach optimal timing advance with out very high octane fuel, and for some reason they don't list it in there manual (too expensive, not available etc). But this knowledge is unknown to me.

Pretty much this statement in bold is only true if toyota isn't recommending the octane to provide optimal timing advance.

MORE TIMING ADVANCE DOES NOT EQUAL BETTER PERFORMANCE. Optimal timing=optimal performance, is found right before engine knock occurs.

I don't believe the 91 make my truck any faster than the 87. However I will say that it's a night and day difference when I'm going up a hill. Especially noticeable with the manual transmission because when I run 91 it doesn't lug nearly as bad and it holds higher RPMS easier than the 87. Also with 87 I noticed a "pinging" issue where if I gave it enough gas and lugged it I'd hear a rattling noise. Especially on hills, and that definitely goes away with the higher octane.

Knock is more likely to occur with heavy load and high temps, such as highway driving, especially in my part of the world. The timing for modern engines ranges wildly if you watch it, and as you said its based on what it can get away with, and what is needed for correct clean injection, especially with the D4S. Watch the data list and you will see it will raise the timing as high as possible, and will not be able to get as high while under load, meaning anything to help it reach a higher timing makes it happy, thus more performance, even if negligible.

    I stand by, 87 city, 89-91 highway.

Dude I pull out of the car wash, and it immediately feels like I have a TRD supercharger with methanol/water injection. The thing is a fuckin hot rod. Then I hit a puddle and everything goes to shit again.

Don't do this! You pamper that that thing and it will expect daily washings and more. Then someday you will park your truck next to mine and then I will be extorted.

Good thing it's covered under warranty!! If a member can plow through some deep potholes while doing 50mph and get the damages repaired, Surely Toyo will cover whatever repetitive damages are resulting from it not being washed properly each week as the owner manual states our trucks should!

You clearly didn't read my post. You believe that the engine will keep advancing timing and gain performance indefinitely. They already have it tuned from the factory for optinmal performance. If it says to run 91 for better performance then yes it's true. But the sense that higher octane=more mpg and more power is not true, depends on engine.

But I will admit I do not know much about the 3rd gen engine and not sure how far it's timing can be pushed or how close the timing is from optimal from the factory on recommends gas. My Guess would be it's not far off. But you may be right, in a way.

Isn't the winter and summer blend gas going to have a small percentage of increased/decreased efficiency?

I would be more inclined to run 93 in the Hot Summer months. I usually run 91 Always Costco or other high tier fuel. All my V6 ford suffered from pre ignition and they were not solved by higher octane. I stoppped buying Fords after having two with pre ignition in the desert.
