    Hey gang,
Need some direction on this one. I smell fuel outside my Tacoma and pulled the air filter out and found it had fuel on it. What would cause this? Is it a bad charcoal canister?

    Thanks!!!

    first, welcome to TW

    second,

there's no rational reason for fuel to be near the air intake seeing as the injectors are mounted on the heads.

do you have any mods or "tweaks" to your truck?

only thing i can think of is you have a bad intake valve and it's letting fuel seep back when the engine is off.

and something to do with the charcoal canister is a good place to start looking. but even then, the tube that goes from the canister to the intake would be blocked by either the throttle plate or the suction of the other cylinders.

and are you sure it's fuel and not oil vapors from the engine?

as you said @CodeSeven it would need to back up through the plenum, intake manifold, TB and then down to the filter (I would love to see it tho haha)

I'm more apt for your second thought of some oil, maybe the tube outside the TB is spitting more oil and running down to the filter?

    Gents,
Thanks for your input. It is definitely fuel getting to the air filter. Truck is all standard equipment, no MODS. There is a small hose coming from the air intake shroud going to the intake manifold that has fuel in it. See photos.

Your fuel pressure regulator is leaking bad, 100% sure. Follow that line back to the rear of the driver side fuel rail, there she be. It will need to be replaced.
The rubber seal for the air filter has also swollen from contact with fuel. Let it dry for a few days and it might shrink back down some, might be able to re-glue it to the box.

View from pass side, yellow arrow is the back end of the line, red is the FPR.

This assumes your sure of the line and not thinking of the line clipped to the front of the same box. Seen in the lower front of your 1st pic.

FPR itself should be between $75-$150 depending on source and brand.
Study it's location for a while. It's really crowded back there, but it can be replaced by moving some hoses and easing a good sized wiring harness out of the way and it will still be crowded.
If this kind of stuff is new to you it would be a good idea to check out a service manual or search for an online vid of the process. There is a tad of "technique" to the process and fuel will be dripping.

    No prob, this may help.
Toyota wants you to pull the intake but if you don't mind loosing a little skin you can skip that.
You will need to unbolt/unclip the harness to the injectors seen below.

that also means the box the hose plugs into has fuel in it. it's not very deep but deep enough for about a cup of gas.
