Well, i believe I have two engine oil leaks. I thought my oil pan gasket was leaking. Replaced it and continued to see oil around it. Looked a bit more and noticed where it looks like oil was running down and coming on oil pan and running backward (so it appeared to be oil pan gasket)

I took some crappy photos. It's raining and I'll take some better ones tomorrow, it looks like it's coming from behind the silver thing that is connected to oil filter. Not sure what that'd be called.

In this photo I am talking about this area, where this is connected to engine:

    The other leak:

(Coming from around where light is shining)

Sorry for crappy photos, they're probably useless, and very stupid threads, I feel like an idiot here.
Thought I might as well get a thread anyways as you guys are great and usually know things right off the bat. After all my engine does have 275k miles, for reference.

    Thanks!

sometimes the oil pressure sending unit will leak. Mine did and it leaks around that area. From what I can tell in your pics.

Really can't tell from the pics, but looks be your oil filter housing gasket leaking. Had the same problem a while back, and thought initially it was the oil pan leaking as well. If you have a 2.7, here are the oem toyota part numbers:

    15692-75011 oil filter housing gasket
    96721-24016 o-ring

Behind the housing is a shaft o-ring that probably needs replacement which is recommended when replacing the main housing gasket. These 2 parts should be very cheap at your local dealer.

Possibly check that your oil filter itself is tight also. Hope this helps.

Thank you, I'm sure they both need to be done.

Any ideas on other leak? I don't even know where to begin with that one.

    You're Welcome.

Really hard to tell from the pics, but may be leaking down from your valve cover gasket? Or possibly a leak at your timing chain tensioner by your upper radiator hose end. Its the small "football" shaped object in the pictures with the circle centered indention mounted by 2 bolts. I would start with the valve cover area though as it seems to be a rather common issue......much more common than tensioner gasket.

Or like Xbeaus mentioned, you may have a leak at the oil pressure sending unit.

Cleaned engine, tightened oil pan bolts a bit (hopefully not too much) and it looks like at least one of the mystery leaks is coming from here:
    image.jpg image.jpg
I can see an old trail where it trailed down to oil pan. I have absolutely no idea what this'd be. It's making my engine so dirty :/

I have the same problem. I’ve changed my distributor with a new one and I also put rtv around the housing and it’s still leaking. And did you find out the same problem

Mines leaks all under the distributor and on the ac compressor and gets in the heat shield of the exhaust manifold. I’m thinking Could it be leaking somewhere from under there.

Thank you. This was about the only piece of info I could find on the internet regarding this. As these trucks keep getting older, I keep finding more and more things that need replacing.. Anything else I should be on the lookout for here?

Ps. sorry, I know this is an old thread, but I'm currently dealing with this issue at the moment

I would want to look above where I see that oil leak. Even though the oil filter housing is wet with oil I wouldn't be so quick to lay the blame there. Take a look at the valve cover gasket.Sometimes they get brittle and start to leak.

Yep, this is probably one of those inevitable 1st gen 3RZ oil leak spots. I'm just happy it's an easy-ish fix.

I'm still waiting on my parts to come in for it. Really only wondering about any other part #s that are missing here. I don't think so, but still..

I'll be posting an update on this as soon as I'm finished doing the job

It also seems to be a very minor oil leak. I've noticed this oil leak 15,000 miles ago, and each time I change the oil (every 5 - 7k miles) I notice that the oil level has only gone down like 40%. This leak still leaves little oil drops every time on the ground though

Is this also an issue with 2002 TRD Tacomas? I just bought one and I've really had to crank the filter on there to stop the leaking. It's possible there is another issue/I'm not identifying the source.

Mine had a leak in this area, but it was the oil pressure sender, not the filter.

This is really a 2rz or 3rz thing, so if you have a 4 cylinder, then maybe

The valve cover area is clean and dry + it’s on a new gasket. I agree though. I’ll be posting more pics of the area above the filter

Just finished doing this for my 3RZ this weekend, and what a pain it was lol. Just wanted to update this thread with more info regarding this, for those in the future.

This video really helped me out with seeing what to do:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m81UuNo04PU

Here's another thread from tacomaworld about this: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/oil-leak-from-the-oil-filter-housing-pics-inside.329217/

    Some helpful info:

    1) You need to remove 3, 12mm nuts/bolts that attach the filter housing to the engine. The youtube video shows that

    2) You don't need to remove the housing completely from the engine like in the video. If you choose not to remove it, it is helpful to un-tighten the bolt that holds one of the oil hoses, so that you can have some slack when un-tightening the lowest of the 3 housing nut/bolts and so you can move the hosing around as well
