Let me start by saying that I love my 3rd gen MGM 4x4 TRD Off-Road, it's an entirely different vehicle from my 1st gen (RIP). With that said, my OCD has me concerned with a few observations about the new truck. Maybe these are normal, or have fixes (TW's search isn't great, so pardon redundancies). Misery loves company, so I'd love to know your thoughts.

    1. Glove box rattle. OMFG this is annoying. it sounds like plastic rattling when accelerating (or persistent on rough roads). This happens independent of glovebox contents, or removal of the shelf.

    2. Vibration from drivetrain when stopped with the transmission in drive. Such as at every stoplight, or in traffic. If you shift to neutral or park the vibration goes away. It's not a strong vibration, but feels unacceptable for a new vehicle.

    3. Touchy brakes, again my previous experience is with a 1st gen so maybe this is normal—but braking seems to lack modulation. The pedal is firm and the brakes work well, but smooth deceleration is challenging.

    4. 6 speed automatic transmission favors MPGs over drivability (ECT Power helps). I hear the transmission controller/computer “learns” your driving habits, but after 1000 miles on the clock, this doesn't seem to be the case.

    Your thoughts are much appreciated!

nope, nope, new brake bit touchy but a lot better then 2nd gen. have the 6 auto, only observation is highway speed of 60-65, shift continously up/down going up large grades. Work around is easy though, I just bump the shifter over and stay in 4th then crest hill and let it go back to over drive. When you want power, just have to mash the pedal and the trucks power comes to life. There is a bit of lag between low rpm and high. 2nd gen had better power/torque feel curve in the 2-3k rpm.

My list is simple, no "oh shit handle" on driver side pane. I used it alot on my 2nd gen for getting in/out and 4 wheelin. No home link for the garage. My interior is very quiet and no issues. No way to dimm the video screen either (that ?I have found yet, have on lowest setting), bright as fuck at night.

When I test drove one it had all of those same issues. Except I disagree with number 4. It hurt mpg in IMO. I use cruise a lot. And it would shift like crazy. Hurting MPGs

    1. Nope

    2. What's this "transmission in drive" you speak of?

    3. Nope

    4. See #2

My complaint? Nothing I didn't already know about going in. No unexpected gremlins yet.

I think this might be coming from the dash speaker. I used a stethoscope (yes, I am THAT OCD) to isolate it. When it warms up a little, my plan is to pop off that little cover and see if there is something in there.

For this, I started moving the shifter to "manual" and putting the truck into 6th gear for long hauls. Works for me on most highway hills.

And I also noted this on my "initial quality" survey that Toyota sent me today.

I also have that rattle, tapping sound near the glove box area. It may be coming from the front speaker cover on the passenger dash.

No kidding right? I mean, those things are known for their initial quality and off-road prowess. Not to mention the fact that you can save the world from the environmental impact of TEN Tacomas by getting one.

That right there is sarcasm in case you didn't notice.

Thats where I've tracked my noise to. Now I just need to come up with a fix.

Took mine to the dealer and of course they couldn't "recreate" it. Haha. I'm probably gonna take the speaker cover off and insulate it better somehow

I remember reading a post where a member had the same noise and just by removing the cover and putting it back on got rid of it.
Edit: I can make the noise stop by wedging my finger in between the cover and the pillar.

    :crapstorm:

    Thanks everyone.

Pretty sure I was buying a Rolls Royce—with the JBL premium tech package. Although, no umbrella holder in the door...
I've been driving Tacos for ≈15 Years, and this one's pretty damn fancy.

I'll take a look at the passenger side speaker cover, and play around with the automatic transmission over the pass.
I'm sure if I bring these issues up to the dealer it'll get a "normal" or "can't reproduce" diagnosis.

And you'll get the added bonus of new noises when some jackwagon tech pulls apart your truck looking for things that he won't be able to find.

2nd gens did have a rattle behind the glove box that was traced to a wiring connector rattling against neighboring metal/plastic. And these things can get missed in prototype testing - the prototypes may have had the zip-ties and electrical tape fastened a certain way, while the production line workers did them slightly differently.
