One of the others in here had the ST maxx and he had a bunch of pulling issues. You could look at BFG in the 255/85 size

If it comes down to the ST or the STMaxx. Go with the Maxx. Newer style and better overall characteristics. Sucks that 255/85 only has a handful of options

I have the 255/85/16 ST Maxx. Now, I am a 1st gen, but from what I've read fitment should be very similar if not almost identical on the 2nd gen.

My experience was that there is minor rub in a couple spots on the frame, and there is some rub against the inner fender liner.

I'd personally recommend smashing in your pinch weld to avoid excessive rub against the tire edges at full lock. I didn't do this until very recently, but damage to the tires was minimal.

I have been running these tires for the past 9,000+miles and all good despite the minor rubbing. I went coast to coast on them, plenty of freeway miles, plenty of wheeling (including Rock Therapy in Moab), navigating ridiculously tight up and down roads in Cali with all of their stupid parking lot entrances that look more like anti-tank obstacles, and I have been happy.

I've only just put my new suspension on, including smashing in the pinch weld, we'll see if the rubbing is eliminated.

    thats good to hear.

I have read all I can on the pull. It really seems hit or miss. I wonder what the relation to the pull is vs. the tire width?

Plan was tires / sliders this spring. Also upgrading tablesaw so thats a big chunk of change too. Then suspension was later this year.

The pull seems a strange issue.

From what I can gather, it seems that the pull only just started for people that got tires in approx the past 6 months. I know that Cooper has been struggling to keep up with the demand for ST Maxx, especially in the 255 sizes, so I am wondering if their recent ramp-up in production of the tire had some minor defects for some batches of tires.

In the ST Maxx thread I asked the OP to create a poll on tire pull, which he did, and the results are 52% have no pull, 41% pull right, and 7% pull left. Now, there's no way to verify how many of the voters are correct about having pull, or if they have pull whether they are correct to attribute it to the tires and not to shoddy alignment. One thing that is interesting, the people that voted as having pull seem to have all got their tires quite recently (during/after the shortage that caused crazy wait times on orders).

So, assuming that at least half of the people reporting pull aren't suffering from placebo/mob mentality, and their pull is actually due to the tires, I would imagine that it is a recent batch issue due to Cooper having to ramp up production. I wish that we could get everyone who's ever had the ST Maxxs on the forum to vote in the poll, this would test my hypothesis of the pull being a relatively new and batch limited phenomenon. Prior to a few months ago, I can't find a single post talking about pull one direction or the other.

May not be one of the options you're considering, but I have the Duratraks and I really like them. Drive great, excellent traction, and so far wear has been good, too. I bought them over the BFG KO2s mostly because of price and glad I did.

Thats my plan as of right now. Go down Friday night late, and leave late Saturday. Grady has an early hockey game Sunday. But, obviously, you guys can stay Sunday. I can show you different things to do or how to get back to some of the trails.

Schweet. Are there campsites that we pay or do you know a place that we can all just camp at for two nights? I'd probably come Friday evening then leave Sunday late morning.

There are state campsites, national forest campsites, private campsites and you can always backcountry camp with a permit. There are rules to backcountry camping, like staying so many feet from trails, cliff lines, ect...ect. So if you are rooftop tenting it, you probably won't be able to just park anywhere and camp. I've camped at all of the different options, and they are all good, with different pros and cons. My guess is this time of year, it will most definitely not be crowded. So whatever you guys want. I may shack in a hotel with the boys, I've done plenty of cold camping, and in my opinion this isn't worth camping in the cold for, but knock yourselves out. If you camp, we will definitely come by and hang out for awhile.
