That's bull crap. The repair costs Toyota about $56, which is chump change versus pissing you off. There may be some guidance to dealers to try to keep warranty repairs to a minimum, but this is foolishness. Anyone who notices the problem and complains about it is obviously irritated, and will be less likely to buy a Toyota in the future if the company doesn't step up with a fix, especially since they've gone to the work to develop the new calibration.

I suggest you go to the other dealer, there's nothing that says you have to get service from the dealer you bought from.

Right on....go to another dealer or call Toyota Customer Service about the current dealer's comments about the repair. They require resolution from the dealer within a specific time frame. I probably wouldn't want them touching my truck any ways if they're that difficult to deal with.

I can't understand why a dealer wouldn't want to work with their customers on stuff like this. One would think that they would understand the value in keeping their customers happy and loyal. If you can, I'd suggest finding a dealer that appreciates your business.

called and made an appointment to have the trans checked this Thursday, the guy I spoke to didn't have a clue about the problem or a fix. I'll take a copy of the TSB with me and see how it goes, small town only one dealer close by..............hope this dosen't turn into an ongoing battle with the dealership

Can someone with an 09 and had the tsb done do a test? Let your truck coast down to different low speeds (5-20 mph) and find out exactly at what speed the transmission shifts to 1st. My '10 seems to consistenly shifts to 1st at below 10 mph, going straight or turn. I am just trying to figure if the the '10 models have the upgrade like some dealers mention.

    Thanks

I just pulled up at a dealership I've never been to with the tsb in my hand and they fixed it right there in 45 minutes, no questions

My first post, so bear with me. Wish I'd found this tread before I bought my Tacoma. Owned my Tacoma three weeks. I'm driving a 2010 4x2 PreRunner Dbl Cab Short Bed 4.0L V6 5-Speed Auto. Having same issue with transmission as described above with the additional comment that it happens when I make turns at lower speeds. Left turns across on-coming traffic is especially tricky if the transmission picks that time to hunt for the "right" gear. Have been working with dealership for the past week (have not completed the Purchase/Lease survey yet and dealership is very interested in getting this resolved before I complete the survey). Service Manager call this afternoon. He stated that Toyota was aware of the defect with the 2010 transmission and they are working on a solution. The TSB for the 2009 model does not address the defect with the 2010 model and he could not provide a timetable for when a solution will be available (surprise!). I am going to file my complaint with the NHTSA Office of Defect Investigation (safercar.gov); there is already one formal complaint filed against Toyota for the 2010 Tacoma Automatic transmission (OID # 10293032 on October 6, 2009). I will also send the certified letter to Toyota as the first step in filing a claim under Georgia's Lemon Law. For other 2010 owners - suggest you file formal complaints through NHTSA and Toyota otherwise we may have to wait a long time for a solution like the 2009 owners.

Nah, I was actually hoping it would go up! :D

With the type of drive I have to work and my driving style I usually post among the highest MPGs... I figured after a couple of tanks I'll know if the mileage has changed and will let folks know what to expect, if anything.

I just got mine done at Fred Anderson off Hwy 70... no complaining or whining, just mentioned the transmission lags between 1-2 gear, especially noticeable when going around corners. I had the TSB number in my pocket if needed but didn't need it... done in a hour. See Wellman if he's there, didn't give me any grief about it.

I'm still confused as to the behavior of the issue. Has anyone taken a video of this? I tried to duplicate the issue .. will try to video capture it later.

Not very hard to duplicate. Just do a left hand U-turn in a parking lot under 10mph and voila...the engine revs higher than the speed you're going. The computer has basically put the tranny in 1st gear when 2nd would have been more appropriate. When it does go to second finally, it shifts hard like you're on the gas hard...but you're not. That's the main problem, but there's also the notion that it decelerates more quickly too because it downshifts once you let up on the gas, particularly at highway speeds or going down hill, though I've personally not had/noticed this problem.
