How many actual miles are on the truck? They get pretty bad fuel economy during the engine break in period, then it gets better. Winter blend fuel with ethanol should knock you down 1-2 mpg. A heavy throttle foot will ding you at least that much.

It has 10K on it. I believe the break in period is over. Which is why I wondered about having the computer re-learn...

True! The 14 mpg just caught me off guard. If it had been 16-17 I wouldn't had bothered with this tread lol. We'll see how this tank goes...

It should learn on its own in a tank or two. I'm currently not doing too much better than you on winter blend and I average over 18 in the summer. My tires are aired down slightly from what I run in the summer, too.

Ok, so I won't try resetting the CPU just yet. I'll give it a couple of fill ups first. If I can get 2 more mpg, I'd be happy..that's 1 more day to and from work lol.
I'll update this as it goes. How do I get my fuelly app to post here?

I'm assuming this is an automatic and wondering what gear you have it in driving around ?
I found luggin' around at 1500 RPM isn't always the answer either..... just a thought.

Yup, it's an automatic..didn't have a standard in stock. I have it in D. I know the lever is a little touchy and can slide into 4 without much effort. It downshifts when it needs to for hills, etc.

I assumed winter blend ethanol was no more and it was just year round now?

Anywho, i attribute bad mileage in winter due to the cold temps which varies the air fuel mixture. If i have warm weeks during the winter with supposed "winter gas", my mileage goes up. Winter, 16.5-17.5 mpg, summer 18-20 mpg. Also, the tacoma is the most influential vehicle i have ever owned as far as mileage and "taking it easy". It wasnt until i got an Ultragauge and watched my instantaneous mpg that i saw what little touch of the gas can do to mileage. I thought i was taking it easy, but apparently not in the tacoma's world. The ultraguage probably increased my mileage 1-1.5 mpg.

OP, I have a 2015 TRD Off Road Access Cab that I bought in May 2015. Mine had 10 miles on it when I drove it off the lot and is still stock except it has a snug top cap on it. My commute to work is longer than yours so I likely drive more highway miles. I have never been below 18 mpg and my last fill up was 20.39mpg. I have used "regular" gas and lately have been using "plus" from Chevron. In Central Oregon it is harder to find non ethanol gas and they do winterize it. I keep my tires at 32 up front and 29 in the back, which is recommended from the label posted on the door jamb. Like others have said, run some tanks through it and get a baseline. I am just now at 20,000 and the mpg has been pretty steady the whole time. I use the fueleconomy.gov site for tracking and am not sure how to post it here or I would.

Give it a few tanks, good luck and keep us updated.

Hi Paul.... Try driving around in "4" for a tankful to compare, reserving "D" for high speed highway driving unless there are a lot of hills, in which case you might still want to downshift to 4. Sometimes having a little more responsive throttle let's you "feather" the fuel with the gas pedal instead of sticking your foot into it to have to get it to move. I find it gives me more control and will probably lengthen the life of your brakes.

Does the truck feel quick and peppy ? My truck may be getting a little tired, but unless I'm doing over 65-70 for prolonged stretches it doesn't need that overdrive gear and it performs poorly in the Northeast. I get 12 MPG towing a 4500 lb trailer.... 18 unloaded isn't unusual but I don't get those 20+ numbers I read about around town.

I might have to look into that, I also understand a 4L V6 is going to take more gas even on little things, but I'd still be happy with the 16-17 in the winter. Not this 14 mpg lol. I also thought colder dense air was better for engines...might be way off on that.

I could live with those numbers!! I'll certainly be checking the tire pressure all around and get it to factory specs (if it's not). I'll try a couple more tanks with the "Regular" and see what happens. Then maybe some with the plus, I haven't found anything in CT, RI, or MA that carries a non ethanol blend.

Maybe it's a cold weather thing, but my 15 Prerunner DCSB 4.0/auto has been averaging 22mpg. Even got 23 on a recent road trip, and I don't drive very gently :D

I'm willing to try almost anything lol! I do have a decent amount of hills with my current commute route. I could re-route my commute to avoid them, it will be a few miles longer, but no hills. That might help.

In the week I've owned the truck, i haven't had to floor it to do anything...though I really really want to! I'll try it out in "4" too.

I wouldn't really change too much until you get an idea of your mpg with your driving style. I do use 89 (plus) gas, but many don't recommend it or say there is a difference with the 87. I think if you drive in 4 at highway speeds, your mpg will go down, running at higher rpms. I only drive in D, have a tiny bit of road rage (floor it and drive excess speeds) at times :burnrubber:. Last month I drove in 4H for a week (about 500 miles) due to snow and ice. Your mileage will vary and I imagine you will get a better baseline soon. I do keep tire pressure at or below recommended because of road conditions. If you have dry roads, I bet inflating your tires a bit could benefit your mpg, but that would be all I would change at the moment.

Mine takes a huge hit once the winter blend starts. I use 93 octane with no ethanol and I still barely reach 18 mpg. Of course it doesn't help that I've added all kind of shit to mine which makes it much less aerodynamic. That said... I didn't buy my truck for mileage. I bought it to use.
