Installed Cooper At/3's (265/70R16) and ProComp 7089 Rims. Tinted front windows. Did the Fog Light Anytime mod. Did the tailgate mod. Added running boards. Adding sound Deadening from RAAMaudio. Replacing stock speakers with Polk Audio DB6501's.
I have a 2015 with the HD head unit. USB will charge my Gallaxy S4 (but slowly). Music will not play nor does the truck see the device. Bluetooth works fine. Therefore, I don't use the USB.

    Stock and loving it
Transferring files. It gives 0.5 amps. Your tablets and large phones do not recognize that as charging

It's just a standard USB 2.0 spec port on the HU. I'm assuming it puts out 500mA. My iPod charges just fine but it's from 2006 and 500mA is just fine for it.

Most phones will charge at 500mA slowly, but 1A is normal for a smartphone. Where tablets usually charge at 2A, but can slow charge at 1A when not being used.

So it's not going to charge a full size tablet, but it should charge a phone (slowly). Perhaps not a new phablet though, but my iPhone 6s charges alright. It's better used for an iPod or data use rather than quick charging of devices. You're better off getting a 2.1A 12V charger to put in the 12V outlet if you want to charge your tablet, or phone quickly.
