So the composite plastic bed is supposed to have a higher impact resistance than steel? That's what the OG tv commercials for the truck said. Anyways, after 4 & 1/2 years and 88k miles I managed to crack the (headboard?) of the bed, essentially the width wise piece directly behind the cab.

Maybe moving one of those engine blocks did it. Maybe it was hauling around the bike, maybe it was landing impact from a jump. I don't know. Basically wondering if anyone else has done this to their truck and if, and how, you repaired/replaced the part. Maybe there is a product to "weld" the crack back together?

    Thanks

Broke my bed also about a year ago where the headboard meets the driver side panel, I had a slot machine in the back sliding around. I got it patched with a fiberglass kit and when I'm transporting anything heavy I make sure it's tied down securely.

Oh, that bed. That sucks. When I saw the thread title I was about to applaud you for your sexual escapades. Oh well.

I'd call Toyota and the dealership. See if they have any suggestions for repair. Otherwise, start calling junkyards. Good luck.

I see your in Tucson. My uncle is the GM of the El Conquistador resort. We're going down to visit him in a couple of weeks. I'll have my truck. Any trail suggestions?

Sounds exactly like my break only mine is on the passenger side. It runs from top to almost bottom right now. I'm assuming the fiberglass kit is like a solvent? I'll have to check that out. Maybe I will bolt some kind of cross bars back there to reinforce it.

My crack was about 8 inches long and I remember the guy mentioning that he reinforced it with a few clamps. My first attempt was to get it to the plastic weld shop but they said they couldn't fix it, according to them it's not really plastic.

That's a good idea. Try epoxying or fiberglassing and back it with bolted in sheet metal. Probably will be stronger than new.

Sure, you rocking a Pre Runner or the 4x4?
There's plenty of places to go around here since it's all desert and mountains.

If you have 4x4 you could take Charouleau Gap, it's more north of town but it's a great trail, lots of rock crawlers. A stock 4x4 will make a portion of the drive but some trail equip and armor is really required to make the 19 mile trek. Google map it, zip is 85739

Most of the trails are in that vein, outside of town. Further north around Oracle, AZ you can take the north side of Mt. Lemon through pepper sauce canyon.

There are also a bunch further south near Madera canyon. Including a 2wd gem owned by the UofA called the Experimental Range. Logic tells me it's trespassing but my heart tells me I'm doing well. It's a mix of 2wd and 4x4 trails. If I can round up coordinates I'll pm em to you.

This is a great place for wheeling, alot of good land is state land though so be careful. I'd disclose em but I'd feel bad if you got a trespassing citation because of me.

Good luck and have fun while you're here. For more info check out the Arizona region page here, all the AZ guys are freindly and helpful. They could probably help you out better.

4x4. I may check out that Charouleau Gap since I'll be on the North end of town anyway. Probably won't be able to do more than dink around for a few hours but anything is better than nothing. Thanks.

Is it really now? Ok, maybe. I'll see how much ambition I can muster, I mean, I know what it looks like.

I broke my bed too while hauling my motorcycle. Brought it to two dealers, the dealer who sold me my truck and then the second, a dealer that my girlfriend, who happens to be an attorney, has represented quite a few times in lemon law cases. The second dealer had no problem replacing the interior portion of the bed free under warantee.

Nice! They didn't invoice you for what it 'would have cost' did they? I'm far out of warranty. It seems like 3rd party reinforcement would be the strongest, although maybe not the most cost effective.

I don't know what it would have cost. Labor wise, it only took them 2 hours to do and it was the first one that they had done. Easy fix for them but I'm sure it isn't cheap for the bed insert.

Before you fiberglass, I would drill small holes down either side of the break and baseball stitch it with stainless wire. My 2 bits.

I'd go show it to the Toyota Rep and the dealership and tell him that your not in too big of a hurry, but would like it fixed. Make a big deal out of it at the time and tell them you have all weekend to sit around with a sign on your truck saying bed cracked!!

don't forget to stop-drill the crack or something of the like to stop the crack where it is.
