Did a little test and found something odd.

Same 80 mile trip. Not very flat, but not more than 1000 ft elevation gain.

Cruise set at 70 and got 20.5mpg
Cruise set at 75 and got 14.7mpg
Cruise set at 80 and got 18.9mpg

At 75 the truck stayed in 4th 75% of the time.
At both 70 and 80 it utilized mostly 5th and 6th while occasionally dropping to 4th.

Maybe someone smarter can make more sense of this. And this was all done the same day so nearly same weather conditions and flow of traffic (or lack of)

This is caused by the amount of horsepower each speed requires. The relationship between velocity and horsepower is not linear. It is exponential; due mostly to wind drag increasing exponentially at high velocities.
Your vehicle is able to make enough horsepower at the RPM the engine runs at to hold 70mph.
The problem with 75 is that it needs more horsepower to hold 5mph faster, but the increase in RPM between 70 and 75 in fifth gear is not enough horsepower increase to make it hold 75mph.
When you increase the RPM higher in fifth gear to reach 80, the horsepower is high enough to hold 80mph in that same gear because the RPM is now high enough to make that much horsepower.

Also, the engine is trying to stay where power is most efficiently made by the fuel going into the engine. Sometimes, dumping too much fuel into a low revving motor isn't efficient.

Not sure if this has been posted before but Fuelly has a number of 2016's listed .

    http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tacoma

Looks like the 2016's are unfortunately only getting a small increase in overall mpg as compared to the the second gens.

Got the best mileage my truck has ever gotten tonight. Added AFE air filter this morning. Put about 100 miles on it tonight through town and on the highway 55-60mph. Has typically been under 16mpg since I added the spacers and the heavier tires.

was up to 19.7mpg but didn't get a pic

What have you all been getting when you go offroad? I've been getting anywhere from 7.5 to 11. Ugh, this really limits it's range.

I don't even check. I typically only off road for a less than 10-15 miles.

I've been covering some serious ground since I got mine. I got it in the middle of bird season and I hunt some very rugged areas. The upside is, I've been able to access areas that I hadn't been able to in my old full size Chevy. Man I loved that truck and hated to see it go but I've been in some spots that I could have never gotten to before. That being said, ny Chevy had a Duramax diesel in it and that big ole motor got about the some mileage as this smaller truck. I hope someone builds an aftermarket long range tank for this truck.

Don't put too much hope in that being the air filter, reality is air filters have zero effect on computer fuel injected vehicles for over 20 years.

First tank (294 mi) on my 4X4 AC AT with stock tires. Truck computer had 20.1 mpg and hand calculation was 20.2 mpg. Mostly hilly secondary roads with some stop n go. Speeds up to 55 mph.

This was from a chill evening cruise, a lot of country roads, some light city driving, about zero highway, some small hills. I'm fairly light on the gas. This was a round trip, started home, ended home. So any hills I went down, I had to come back up.

So far, I'm happy with MPGs. Of course, an average tank is getting me 18-19mpg because I have a 5mi all-city commute to work that kills it. But with it being winter formula at the pumps, I think summer will give me an extra 2mpg on average (hopefully).

I have 120 off road miles, or so. I get 5mpg if I'm crawling and going slow and 12mpg if I'm cruising on dirt roads. The Atkinson is great for getting good gas mileage at very low speeds.

I don't think the truck has any more of a limited range than any other off road truck. What are you comparing this Offroad range to?

Have any of you guys checked your tires PSI cold?

I have a TRDORSB 4x4 auto, and most of my driving is highway. I could barely break 20 mpg hwy.

I added the air dam and air my stock tires to 34.5 psi and now I'm getting 23 mpg hwy.

The TPMS screen will tell you the PSI of each tire. I'm driving a stock DCLB OR 4x4 with big mud flaps and 35psi and get 23-25 on the highway. How fast do you drive?
