Too each his own my friend, bottom line is that no matter what your firearm of choice is...practice, prepare and plan. If you're not ready I don't give a Damn what cha got.

With all that being said I only recommend a shotgun due to the fact most people will never train enough with any weapon system. A shot gun is a good all around gun but they do have short comings. If anyone ever enters your home in the mid of the night most home owners will be in a panic. Training is most important! Even though I recommend a shotgun I will admit It's not my go to. We all need to remember everyone is on different levels of preparedness. If you are asking a question about what gun to use I assume your at the low end.

Well said, I have shot plenty, and still wonder if i am ready. You wont know until its time, so make sure you're as prepared as you can be.

Not sure I'd recommend a shotgun at all. We've already seen how many think the "gigantic wall of lead" will rain down on an intruder and to me that means "I don't have to aim or train, I just have to point and pull the trigger."

For most people, unfortunately, the safest home defense weapon is their cell phone.

While I think you make some good points and generally agree with what you said, you aren't doing anyone any favors by speaking to others in that manner. This kind of attitude is the reason so many people are intimidated by guns and "gun people". They are afraid of being perceived as going "full retard" by people like you who instead of helping them make informed decisions about gun ownership and training decide to make them feel like crap just because they don't know better and are acting on info they have received elsewhere. I hope in the future you will take a different and more constructive approach to getting your point across without alienating people or putting them down for sharing their opinions and what they've been told in the past.

I also think that when people think of a shotgun, that they would be just standing out in the open ready for action. In reality, you may be crawling around on the floor hunkering down. Have fun doing that with a shotgun. I'll empty my 1911 with accurate shots by the time a shotgun is on its second. If a shotgun is all you have, then it is what it is, better than nothing.

Going back to the practice thing, whatever gun you shoot, be comfortable with it. You know when your lying in bed at night and you want to check your phone? I bet you can grab your phone, enter the security code and start an app without even looking at it. That would be ideal if you could handle your firearm the same way. Im afraid many people buy a gun, might shoot it a few times at the range, and think theyre good. When the pressures on, they freeze or become really slow in their handling.

I understand that and as I mentioned, I generally agree with him and what he said. The point is that the manner in which he is expressing his opinion isn't helping the situation. That's all. Not trying to cause an argument. I'll happily see myself out now.

This is what I said earlier, which ever weapon your most familiar with, but this is much better said. One thing not mentioned is that if you shoot someone in your house they damn well better be armed, or your the one that is likely to go to jail in most States. You have to positively identify your target and threat assessment before you pull the trigger. 2 dogs and a tactical flashlight will hopefully help me from ever having to shoot, but things don't always work out as planned. And usually don't in these situations.

Some of my guns have more than 100k rounds through them. The Toller in my avatar is sitting in an empty 12 pound keg of Red Dot gunpowder that I bought in 83, which was about the end of the 12 pounders due to shipping and hazmat regs. I have a lot of water and lead under the bridge. Through rifle, pistols and shotguns. Close combat on ships in compartments I always picked the shotgun, works best for me and is second nature.

If your intent on shooting a pistol for home defense then IMO you should shoot IDPA at a minimum. Punching holes on paper at the target range with proper breathing and form looking for a perfect sight picture is a lot different than what we are talking here. Pistol is the least accurate for most people from what I have observed unless they have a lot of experience with it. And I mean a lot. No matter what gun you have you better know what to do when you have a Failure To Fire (FTF) without even thinking about it. That would include knowing how to hit the slide release on a shotgun in your sleep.

As far as pump shotguns being slower, that is not always the case. Most people think I'm shooting an auto when shooting doubles or hunting. But it came from many years of shooting. The pump shotgun is not an obsolete weapon nor outdated. Many LEO's have them in their vehicles for a reason....

Lot of mention of the 870 Express in this thread. Military and LE uses the 870 Police because it is more reliable than the Express and I would want mine to be also. There are steps to upgrade an Express to a more reliable workhorse, Brownells offers all the parts you need. At a minimum I would replace the mag spring and follower with a longer stiffer spring like the Police has, especially if you are storing it loaded. The compressed weaker express spring may not feed reliably after sitting like that for a period of time. There are other upgrades but jamming at feed is the most common issue I see with the 870 Express.

Shoot often and shoot well, especially with what ever your the most comfortable with.

I'd like to see expansion going through typical clothing layers and into flesh.

Ballistic gel only tells so much, there are several brands of HPs that look a lot different in actual expansion in a body cavity than they do in ballistic gel and in advertising pics.

Aren't there two "lines" of 870s now compared to only 1 like there was in the past?

I fail to see how a shotgun is any more or less complicated mechanically to operate? Aim...pull trigger once you have good sight picture....rinse and repeat. I'll give you maybe not having to change mags is simpler, but I would rather deal with that burden than be limited to 6-8 rounds filled with shot that will go God knows where.

I understand your point. The problem is there seems to be a direct negative correlation between how informed some people are and how emphatically they state their nonsensical views.

Been 2 lines since sometimes in the 80's, maybe mid 80's don't recall exactly when the Express came out. But there are a lot of different variations of each.

The Wingmaster is the original steel version with better fit and finish. Still made but hard to find they are expensive, variations include a rather unique Trap model. Remington's production quality control has slipped in the last few years, ask any 700 rifle target shooter, but the Wingmasters are still considered the the standard 870 by many.

The Express is made to a much lower price point and by far the most common 870 now and sold at big box stores. They have quite a few models also under the Express line. Because they are made at a lower cost there is more plastic and fit and finish often leaves a lot to be desired. The exception to that is the 870P which still an express, but it is made for the military and police. But still not a Wingmaster in quality IMO. There are quite a few upgrades over the standard civilian Express, trigger assembly is steel instead of plastic (although composite not milled), springs, etc. They are also hand polished for smoother operation. But shooting and cycling thousands of rounds through a standard Express will also make them smoother :)

Gotcha. I thought the 870p was built from a wingmaster but modified towards a police spec rather than hunting focused.

If it wasn't for the Mossberg 500 the 870P would be from a Wingmaster frame. Once they started taking the Winchester model 12's and Ithaca 37's away from us typical government routine is to open bids for the lowest price while meeting milspec. Originally the milspec stated had to have a double slide bar. The 870 is double but the Mossberg is only a single. Mossberg petitioned until the milspec was changed so that it was dropped. Politics.... Some Mossbergs did come in for awhile. The 870P had to compete with the same price as the Mossbergs. I imagine many Police Departments are the same being a government agency.

I've got a 500 and it's a double slide bar. When did that start?

Since we're on the topic, if any of you are well versed in 870 disassembly/assembly I would love to pick your brain via PM.
