dealer wants me to trade in a '14 Taco for '16 worth it?

Just thought I'd post this on here for fun. I have a 2014 Access cab TRD with just over 10,000 miles on it. I got a phone call from the dealer today and he's wondering if I was interested in doing a trade in for a really 'great' deal on one of the new ones.

I'm 2 years into a 4 year lease so I'd have to check the numbers to see what kind of deal he's talking about but if they're willing to make me a good offer I might go ahead with the trade.

I'd appreciate some feedback if it would be worth it or to stick with the 2nd gen model for another 2 years and wait until any kinks are worked out. Overall I'm really happy with my '14 taco so I'm not in any rush to give it up!

    Thanks in advance!

I love my 16. That said with 10k miles and a truck you are happy with and know what ever kwarks it has, why get rid of it? It give it a few years to get thru the 1st few years of problems and reassess your situation.

    Id hold off

ONLY way I would do that is if I could get out of the lease and have the same or lower payment for the same term on a purchase rather than a lease. If they can't do both of those things, I'd walk (or not even go in). My brother bought a 2016 TRD Sport DCLB 4X4. It's really nice, but my 2005 DCLB SR5 is paid for and still running great so I'll keep it. One day I might get a newer Tacoma, but from what I have seen, I just cannot justify the payment go to to a 2016. YMMV.

You're going to get screwed on that deal. They never do anything that benefits you.

I'd say keep it until the lease is up. Why, it's only logical to figure out the exact problems the 3rd gen will have not only now, but later on. I know the temptation is there, but knowing more will help you make an informed decision. On top of that, who knows what small improvements/changes may occur between now and 2018.

Yeah I'll be making sure that the buyout amount that I would have after the 4 years is up will be applied to the trade in value. With the low mileage and the fact that my truck is such good shape it is worth a good amount right now. There will have to be a difference in monthly payments otherwise I'm losing more money than holding out 2 more years.

Just out of curiosity, how is the manual transmission on the '16 vs the 2nd gens? My current taco is a manual and same with the one I had before, the 2010. Did they improve anything or are they essentially the same gearbox?

Maybe they will adapt the 4.0litre into atkinson cycle... That would be worth every penny.

I knew some a-hole would make some comment on the lease. Talk to my accountant about that one apparently it's something called a write off?

No man he told me every week there's like 10 people who walk in and ask for my exact truck and he's got like a list of people with cash who want to buy it as soon as I'm wanting to sell it. So..

They are calling me also for my 14. I said thanks but no. Same deal payment may be same but add more months. No way.

I went in for an oil change on my 2014 SR5 Prerunner DCSB 2WD in October and left with a 2016 TRD Sport DCSB 2WD for the same monthly lease payment ($369/month). I felt it was an upgrade for the same payment. I got $2500 toward the new one from the trade. I had 18k miles on it (in 18 months). My friend is the sales manager and he said the residuals were better on the 2016's compared to the 2014. It's a 36 month lease.

I wish I had a picture of the last letter Yota sent me. It was a letter written to the sales manager supposedly by the regional sales director that singled me and my truck out. Somewhere at the end it read, "Feel free to forward this to the customer." Then it had a yellow sticky on top with a note that asked me to contact him right away, "...these guys really want your 2007 Tacoma."

Who knew I had a collectible!

Different tax laws, I guess. We can only write off half of a lease.

It's a marketing ploy, I get them all the time for vehicles I haven't owned in years. It's worth talking to them, maybe they have a lease buy out deal going on. A 4 year lease is an odd one, and your out of warranty on the 4th year. If you can get into a newer truck without any negative equity and your payment be about the same I would probably take them up on the offer. However this will probably be unlikely

"Dealer wants" should tell you all you need to know who's interest is being served.

Unless you just want some new technology it would not be worth it. Wait until the lease is up and then decide. Since you are happy with the 14 there is no need to get into a 16 at the moment.

I get similar calls/emails from my local dealership every other month.

It is a very old game, and like everyone has said. They are only in it to make money and take more of yours.
