No smartassedness taken at all, masada. Great research. I don't dispute the battery issue. Newer EOTechs are more efficient, but even the old 1000 hours is more than I would use as a civilian before wanting to change the batteries due to age anyway. The point I took issue with was air.177's assertion that Eotechs "become finnicky over time and through hard use". Still looking for some back up on that one.

To address the OP, I chose EOTech because the rifle wearing it is set up for home defense. Quick target acquisition, a large viewing lens and durability were important to me. Magnification and a 50,000 hour battery lifespan were not. I also happen to love the circle-dot reticle of the Eotech.

    Abe Froman,

I've never heard of the Eotech becoming finicky when they get old.

    ***Sarcasm***
But I mean it is an eotech and they are inferior to Aimpoint :D so who knows about their reliability.

    Abe,
It has been my experience and the experience of many others that the Eotech sights can be subject to intermittent failure (i.e. shutting off at random or in recoil). I have had one Eotech 552 fail on an M14 and one fail on a shotgun. Most attribute this failure to compression of the Battery terminal springs due to repetitive recoil impulse, as the batteries and battery terminal springs of the Eotech sight are situated in line of the recoil impulse of the weapon. This can be mitigated by periodic preventive maintenance, and also by replacement of said battery terminals if this issue is encountered.

To be fair, on the M14 the sight was mounted on a "scout mount" above the barrel and did get very hot, most likely contributing to the failure that I experienced, but a close friend of mine still has an Aimpoint sight that was knocked from his rifle during a Helicopter crash and was subsequently burned in the wreckage and the reticle stayed lit for another 2 years after the fact.

Don't get me wrong, the Eotech Reticle is great and it's "heads up" type display is minimally obtrusive, but the short battery life, and possibility of failure at inopportune times bump the Eotech sights out of the top position on my weapons.

    HTH, YMMV

    Good times,
    Blake

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
i shoot some no name red dot on my ar. no moneys to shoot often and cannot justify spending the 400ish on an eotech, however, if i could, it would be eotech.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
I have an EOTech 512 and Aimpoint Comp ML3. Both on LaRue mounts.
