Definitely reduce your warmup. If weather is above 32 degrees, my temp gauge begins moving at .5 miles, at normal temp within 1.5 miles. 10 mile commute, and ScanGauge show trip mpg at 17 (cold weather) 19 summer (no a/c). No stop & go, 3 traffic lights, half divided highway at 55mph.

I was driving a 4cyl GMC Terrain before I bought this truck. I had some concerns about moving from a 4cyl to a 6 cyl, but I became more interested in the benefits of this truck than I was in the benefits of the 4cyl mpg's. I THINK I've been maintaining 18mpg's, but I'm not really concerned about it anymore because of the other benefits I receive. I don't even think about the mpg's 'cause I'm too satisfied with all the other capabilities.

    I get 14MPG all the time......when I'm towing a double axle trailer.
Getting that kind of mileage isn't normal. I used to just run premium non-ethanol when towing but noticed that running it eliminated the "Tacoma Tick".
My best tank was 24MPG but that was after a full 30k service.

Fully agree I would not recommend filling beyond the click point on any vehicle. You can very easily over fill your tank. You also if you use the hold open on the nozzel never leave it unattended those things don't always stop. I have seen plenty of people do the click, pump, click, pump thing wind up with fuel all over the place.

When you get the click some fuel has back splashed up to the nozzel 99% of the time it did that because the fuel level is very near the filler neck. So before you pump after you get a click better be sure you have several gallons to go.

Best fuel economy mod is highway tires (and a light foot on the accelerator). As far as warm up goes - you really just want to get the engine warm enough that it's pumping oil through. I do long warm ups quite a bit - I start the truck and continue getting ready for work, but when I'm in a hurry I watch my torque app and let the engine warm to 100F which is just above the bottom line on the gauge.

At idle (I've read) the 4.0 burns .3 gallons per hour. A 20 minute warm up would burn .1 gallon - which adds up over many starts, but isn't really much fuel.

Is it causing problems beside overflow? I filled up till I could see the level for year every tank to check mileage until I learned that it's auto clicking off is pretty consistent.

How long does it take to get to 165, your assumption of .3 gph is at near full operating temperature. Fire up the defrost while it idles away with the a/c also running and it will never get to 165F at idle.

I measured these years ago at idle with my 2.7L and scangauge. Start out at -10F and it's even worse. That's without the defrost on.

    engine
    temp GPH
    25F -- 1.9
    45 -- 1.3
    65 -- 1.1
    85 -- .9
    125 - .6
    145 - .5
    165 - .3
    193 - .3

I didn't think an engine in idle was burning so much fuel...then again it is a 4L engine...

The engine block heater does more good. Pumping warm oil into a cold engine kills any gains from warming the oil. When it's going to be colder than 0 F I just plug the truck in before bed.

realize the 4.0 is not the most fuel efficient motor. It is a workhorse though for a v6. Revel in the fact that gas prices are low. I'll bet some of the young'ns on here have never seen gas prices this low.

not sure why people continue to blame the "winter blend". Lower MPGs have more to do with cold temps and people idling to warm up.

Many people with block heaters put them on a timer, and set for 2-3 hours heating max.

True, but it easier to blame some tree hugger emissions laws over physics and personal comfort demands.
