I would like more info as well.

Don't care about losing the range of an aftermarket starter. I like things to appear OEM.

Unfortunately yes the truck does turn off when any door is open after remote start.

this is a way around this on Toyotas the bypass module has to do the following:

    1. unlock the vehicle
    2. remote start the vehicle
    3. remote start locks the vehicle (too fool the ecu thinking the vehicle is unlocked and running.)

this will bypass the factory issue but then again, the oem key fob wont unlock the vehicle since the ecu see's the vehicle as unlocked anyway.

I received a response from Fortin: "Thank you for contacting Fortin Electronic Systems.
    1. In the 2016 Tacoma PTS, you can still use the OEM keyfob to unlock the vehicle and/or stop the remote start sequence by pressing 3x lock again on the keyfob/
    2. There is no "take-over" possible on the Tacoma 2016 PTS, the vehicle will shut down when a door is opened,Thank you,

Thank you for all of the advice. I tried to find someone that could install the Fortin bypass to override the "engine off on door open" issue, but there are no dealers within 5 hours of Louisville. I also saw the previous response by @el_zorro1 from Fortin that their system doesn't override the issue. Either way, electrical stuff is out of my league so I didn't want to mess with installing the Fortin myself.

I had the Viper basic 2-way installed by Roberts Mobile Electronics in Louisville (www.robertsaudio.com). They said I could have the OEM fob programmed to start on three clicks of the lock, but that I would be limited to that fob range which, to my estimate, is about 100 ft. I'll be using it from a farther distance so I opted for the Viper fob in addition to my OEM fob.

I dropped off at 8:00 am and got the call it was ready for pick-up at 11:30 am. Sure enough, it has the "engine off on door open" problem as promised. It's not too big a deal as the truck is warm when I get to it. Pushing the button again doesn't hurt my feelings too bad, but the OCD in me finds it problematic. I'll deal with it and keep looking for a way to hack it so it keeps running.

Roberts did a great job with the install and they very patiently answered all of my questions about operation and troubleshooting. Basically, if I have a problem, take it back because they stand by their work. The only thing that looked different inside of the truck is that my change had been moved to the QI charger cubby, I guess to pull the panel. For my electrically-challenged eye, the wiring looks great. If I didn't know better, I'd think that the system came from the factory. By the way, I have to put my head on the brake pedal to be able to see anything at all.

The system works very nicely so far. The only non-start was when I was trying various lock/unlock/start combinations (to try to trick the truck into not shutting down). On the third try, the engine didn't fire despite the starter turning. I let it sit for a minute and tried again with a good start. I think it was just a function of my multiple attempts. Maybe I ran down the battery (unlikely), or just caused an unhappy engine with rapid fire on and off.

Anyway, I'm happy with the system and recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a remote start. If I find an idiot-proof solution to the "engine off on door open," I'll let you know.

Thanks again for all of the advice.

    Jim

If you find a solution, let us know. Post #32 from me is Fortin's response about the bypass...not available for the 2016 Tacoma with push to start.

@el_zorro1, thanks man. I did see your post which settled me on not looking too hard for a Fortin system.

Just had the Compustar Pro T11 system installed in my 2015 Tacoma Double Cab. So far not very pleased with this system. I have had a few compustar systems in the past, and everything was great. Thinking the installer took too many shortcuts on this thing (im also a "retired" installer)

    a few issues:
the lights do not flash for acknowledgement of locking or unlocking.

The "chirp" also does not work when locking or unlocking

the dome light does not come on when unlocking the doors.

This is not a joke. If you want to increase the range of your factory remote FOB, put the remote under your chin and press a button. The remote will use your body as a range extender. Try it and let me know how far you get.

I'm installing a Fortin Evo-All (bypass module) with a Crimestopper SP-502 remote start/alarm system next week. It's going into a TRD Sport so I'll still have to have the factory FOB and the Crimestopper 2-way remote on my keychain. The Crimestopper system is there to give me increased range and 2-way communications. In other words, it'll tell me if it's running and how long and a bunch of other stuff.

I've heard of that, but I can't get the remote under my chin. I haven't shaved since October. Wonder if it will work from the back of my neck?

I had a Compustar system installed on my wife's Traverse and my Tacoma over the holidays. Neither vehicle was returned to their original operation with regards to the locking & unlocking of the vehicles. If I remember correctly, the installer offered these as "options" which I declined since I was already dropping $900+ for both.

In hind sight I wish I would have spent the extra money, but you live and you learn I guess. If anyone happens to come across a video, or a thread explaining the fix, a heads up would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note, I am very happy with my purchase of these remote starters. One remote will operate both vehicles (start, stop, lock & unlock). The range is fantastic! I highly recommend their product.

From Compustar support, when asked about push-to-start, keyless on Tacoma:

"If there is no takeover procedure available for your Tacoma then it will shut down as soon as the door is opened. That is pretty common on Japanese vehicles with push button starters and just how the vehicle is set up. If you open the door and it almost instantly shuts down then the vehicle doesn't have a takeover procedure available. Hopefully that changes down the road to be like other vehicles with push button starters where it is a timed procedure.

    Justin
