Should be the same, I haven't ever done a timing belt but my dad is and he just got back in town last night so he's gonna be able to help me.
The kit I got has the tensioner so I'll probably go ahead and replace it.

 

You had smokey treats comin out of your exhaust too??

Help is a good thing since I'm not a master mechanic. My friend that helped me is so I basically helped him (He did the hard parts, LOL) and got schooled at the same time. That should be some well spent father/son time!

A complete kit will have:

1. Timing belt
2. Upper tensioner pulley
3. Lower tensioner pulley
4. Hydraulic tensioner​

Some kits don't come with the hydraulic tensioner (as I found out and had to run out to the local part store and pick one up)...

Hi all, I'm a new tacoma owner and new to the forum. I bought a 98 sr5 about 3 weeks ago. She had a little mis and misfire codes for cal 1,2 &3 so I changed the plugs and wires which solved that so far. I have a feeling there's a little more to it as the #2 spark plug had no electrode left and was a platinum plug when the rest were matching nkg. This gives me the hint the previous owner had issues with this cylinder.
Anyway, today I cleaned and lubed my hood release mechanism because the hoods been hard to open. I was planning on cleaning the mass airflow sensor to see if that helps my mpg (consistently 15mpg mostly highway). This plan is delayed as I realized my intake tubing is mostly held together with electrical tape. I'm going to hit up the salvage yard tomorrow and try to find a stock intake to replace the crap filter, and tape "cold air intake" attempt on the truck.

You sir are correct. It's the same way I did it to the 03 motor I just put in.

 

Does anyone happen to know the hex key size for the timing belt tensioner pulley?

I can't own something in that decent of condition. I'd feel bad doing anything to it, I want one that's a bit more of a beater. I have to modify my vehicles, it keeps me from being bored.

 

Lol! Yeah that thing is super clean! Probably be just another daily if I bought it lol.

 

You don't necessarily need to remove the AC if you use this tool.
