What is the proper amount of grease to routinely add to the 5 zerk fittings?

    • pump grease until resistance is felt?
    • pump grease until old grease is seen coming out?
    • pump grease until old grease is displaced and new grease is seen coming out?
Can any mechanical damage result from overpacking with grease?

Just to clarify, I was not asking about bearings but zerks in the driveshaft's CV joint.

I thought you guys would understand the difference between a sealed bearing and a u joint. Didn't mean for anybody's head to explode over a simple question.

Yerp, just pump new grease in. Old grease will purge out. Keep pumping until you see new grease coming out.

I know. The 4 ends of the u joint are called bearing caps because there are needle bearings in there.

the front ones are in the center of the U joint.

Also pump grease in slow, you dont want to blow off the sealing ring. But yes pump till its purged. I typically do about 5-6 pumps every oil change (5k miles)

Such a pain in the ass to clean the expelled grease enough so it doesn't go flying all over the place when I'm done greasing the drive shaft.

One can never have too many light bars.
Same. Now I just hop on the freeway and take it to about 85 for a couple miles and it usually cleans itself.

I run/thread a long skinny white rag up around the joint. It seems to catch the old greese and I think it helps see the new greese coming out just a little better.

Takes two rags for all five.
