Its made from Dyneema which is what a lot of climbing gear is made from. It seems tough as hell to me. I have seen him drag it over rock and it not be an issue. He has also had at 19k ft on alpine trips.

I'd actually go further and read up on how to fit a pack to your body.

That way if the REI person doesn't have a clue, you know more than them. If you both have half a clue it'll be a much better process if the ideal situation of a pro pack fitter isn't possible.

    back to bone stock.
If you are ever going to hunt, buy a pack that can handle it. Not only can you carry more gear, you will have extra attachment points for odd gear. Like your bow or rifle or bags of delicious meat.

Mine is a Kifaru. If I could do it again I'd go a diff direction.

So, so true. Do some research on how to properly fit a good pack, and how to get measured (like which cervical vertebrae to measure torso length, and from what base point). If your salesperson doesn't get that part right, move on.

Kuiu has amazing weight carrying. Carbon fiber frames, expandability for rifles/bows/meat, etc.

I've seen them before. They're nice but you have to be a very organized packer as there is only one giant pouch - no extra little pockets and dividers

From what I know of them they're strudy. I believe that is the brand that the backpackinglight guy has. He's out just about every weekend and has had the same pack for years. Has a Tacoma too...

People use Tyvek for DIY tents, tarps, ground cloths, etc,. so I'd assume it's fairly resilient, though AFAIK the biggest draw to tyvek for that kind of thing is it's cheap and good enough.

There are different weights of Tyvek, cuben fiber seems to have gone over better for shelters and backpacks. I have two ZPacks cuben packs, my Zimmerbuilt custom pack is Xpac material. Kifaru makes very good frames, expensive.

I'll just tell them the famous backpacking story about how years ago, when I was backpacking across Western Europe, I was just outside Barcelona, hiking in the foothills of mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path, and I came to a clearing, and there was a lake, very secluded, and there were tall trees all around. It was dead silent. Gorgeous. And across the lake I saw, a beautiful woman, bathing herself. but she was crying...
I hesitated, watching, struck by her beauty. And also by how her presence; the delicate curve of her back, the dark sweep of her hair, the graceful length of her limbs, even her tears, added to the majesty of my surroundings. I felt my own tears burning behind my eyes, not in sympathy, but in appreciation of such a perfect moment.
She spied me before I could compose myself. But she didn't cry out. Instead our eyes held and she smiled, enigmatically, fresh tears still spilling down her cheeks. I was frozen. I knew nothing about this woman, and yet, as we stood on opposite sides of a pool of water, thousands of miles from my own home and everyone I had ever known, I felt the most intense connection. Not just to her, but to the earth, the sky, the water between us. And also to the entirety of mankind. As if she symbolized thousands of years of the human condition.
I wanted to go to her, to comfort her, to probe this feeling of belonging I had never encountered before. But I couldn't. Because I knew that if I spoke, if she spoke, that moment would be ruined. And I knew I would need the memory of that moment to carry me through the inevitable dark patches throughout my life.
And so I watched her lower her hand, turn, and slowly walk to the shore opposite me. The rest of her perfect form was gradually revealed to me, and I held my breath as I watched her disappear behind a copse of trees near the water.
I didn't follow her, in fact I turned around. I knew there was nothing else we could experience together that would be more perfect than that moment...and it still remains the most profound experience of my life

If you get this joke you're instantly awesome

This is a great thread. I waffle on the whole "gear" thing. I seem to accumulate outdoor related "stuff", including the type of gear specific to this thread. Then at some point I look at all of it and say "wtf do I have that for...I've only used it once or not at all?". Then I sell all of it. I think I've finally settled into having all I really need. I have a set of gear for car camping and another set for hiking/backpacking. Great gear can make for an awesome experience in the outdoors, but I also think there's a very fine line for the gear becoming the focus of the experience and many miss out on the amazing experience that the simplicity & beauty that the great outdoors offers.

I do enjoy seeing what's new out there and really appreciate quality gear!

Just sharing as I enjoy a morning cup of chaga tea.

It's from the show Friends, it's the story Joey tells to girls to impress them and later Rachel steals and uses which is what gets her pregnant with Ross. Friends is, in my opinion, one of the best written shows of all time.

There was a long discussion about darn tough socks a couple days ago. Massdrop has a 3 pack of their 1/4 hiking socks (men's and womens) for $37 shipped which is an amazing deal (in for one set: two pairs for me and one for the girlfriend).
