Quick Opinions on a 1998 Tacoma 4x4?

I'd be sure you have a good feel for the truth why he's selling it. Maybe doesn't need it anymore. Maybe he's replacing it with a newer truck, but no one does that if the old one is in good shape and does everything the new one does. If it truly needs nothing, then the price he's asking probably isn't far off. If you find something that needs to be done for safety or regular maintenance, I'd take that amount off the amount he's asking. Otherwise, looks like a very nice truck for the miles it has.

 

I have a 98 around the same miles minimal rust (cutting the rust off the wheel wells anyways fit bigger tires) and its unreal, just put in anew clutch and there is not a lot I would trade this for. Highly recommended!

 

Anyone who's upgrading or downsizing.

- My '92 Toyota Pickup was in great condition when I bought it, with ~100K miles on it.
-- Previous owner's family grew, so he needed more space.
-- It was still in great shape when I sold it, with ~200K miles on it.
- My '04 Tacoma was in excellent condition when I bought it, with ~40K miles on it.
-- Previous owner, a Toyota mechanic, got in over his head on the payments and had to sell.
-- It's still driven daily and in excellent condition.
- My son's '97 Tacoma was in great condition when he bought it, with ~200K miles on it.
-- Previous owner, who used if for long highway commutes, retired and no longer needed it.
-- Sadly, the truck was totaled due to teenage buffoonery.
- My son's '01 Tacoma was in very good condition when he bought it, with ~140K miles on it.
-- Previous owner upgraded to a 2nd Gen.
-- It's still driven daily and in very good condition.

The bottom line is plenty of well maintained trucks are bought and sold every day. It's up to would-be buyers to do their homework, so they know what they're getting.

 

It has been well maintained despite the high number of owners. There's no way a truck of this age would look as good as it does without it being taken care of along the road. It's been mechanically maintained as well, the guy who owns it now had a lot of work done replacing and updating parts. He is selling because he has 3 cars, and replaced this with an older tundra to fit his family.

I had an odd feeling about it at first, but the questions I had have been cleared up. He is just a slightly strange guy haha. I thought about it a lot and am going to buy it, he met me in the middle with the price and I'm going to buy it for $7700!

I only made my comment about who sells a well maintained truck because I never have!!

I needed a bigger truck so I bought a Ford F250 7.3 it is just me and I have 4 street legal vehicles.

When it is time for a vehicle to move on it was given away or sold at scrap price.

I didn't read all posts, did he replace timing belt and water pump recently?

 

Unclear from OP's post whether Water Pump was done in conjunction with Timing Belt, though that is somewhat standard practice.

 

Steering rack could be only bushings needing to b replaced. Mine had a lot of play. I replaced myself 3 weeks ago. It runs like new. 40.00 dollars in parts n 2 hours of work. I would get a second opinion
