V4 vs. V6?

    Someone's always faster and someone's always slower. Personally, The 4 is fine for my uses (a couple of surfboards on top). I like the mileage. If I was hauling heavy loads the 6 and 4 would get about the same mileage which then the 6 would be the obvious choice. You need to ask yourself what your priorities are. I'm coming off of a Porsche 911 Turbo so I know what real power feels like, The 6 and the 4 are both slow in my book so I'll take the mileage.

    What is it about the 4cyl in auto that's so undesirable? Or conversely, what is it about the manual 4cyl that's so great? And does this apply to 4x2 or only 4x4's? Thanks.

    I have a 2014 Access cab 4x4 4cyl 5spd manual and it has plenty of power for me even with the lift and bigger tires but when I first started looking I test drove the same truck as mine only with the automatic and it felt way underpowered. in the end I ended up with the manual because its what I really wanted plus manual's are much more fun to drive. :D

    I shoulda multi quoted bt heres my take. ive owned a 2014 reg cab 4x4 5spd and now im in an AC 4cyl 4x4. I will flat out tell you the 5spd was much better. yes one is heavier than the other but the auto is a DOG. climbing hills in a 5spd is much easier, the auto likes to hunt for gears causing you to floor it hoping itll find the right gear. im running 265/75/16 tires that were on both trucks and the 5spd takes the cake. ive tried dropping gears in the auto but its nothing like slamming it into 3rd with the 5spd and you get moving

    only reason why I opted for the 4cyl is gas mileage. I do tons of city driving 15-20mins sometimes 30min drives, traffic light to traffic light. V6 id prolly average 15mpg 16 if im lucky. the 4cyl I get 18-19mpg. high 18s anyway. another reason would be I have more knowledge of fixing the 4cyl vs the v6.

    Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.
    I just like the feel of a 4 cylinder and a manual transmission.
    It makes me a better driver. :)

    The I4 autotrans only has 4 speeds, the ratios between 3rd and 4th gear are too far apart for a heavy 4x4. The AC 4x4 I4 auto's I've driven at 70 mph the engine is running at 2100-2200rpm, which is great for highway MPG, but far outside of the powerband to accelerate/pass in 4th gear. In order to pass someone the trans needs to downshift to 3rd gear causing the engine scream well north of 4500rpm just to make a simple pass. The "sluggish feel" is the worse while cruising around 55mph/1500rpm in 4th gear a lot throttle input is needed before the trans downshifts.

    I'm perfectly happy with the auto behind the 4 in my 5 lug AC. I'm sure 4wd would make a difference. With the auto I've got no problem with a squeaking clutch or trans whine or shifting into first or clutch wearing out. For me, the auto does just fine and is dang near bullet proof. I've owned a boat load of 3, 4, 5 and 6 speed manuals, but now I'm old and tired and a manual in rush hour traffic just ain't fun no more. But, to each their own. That's why they sell both!

    I think this is because a manual transmission is lighter and there is less HP/torque lost through it. So if you have vehicle that is a little weak with a certain engine and an auto, it will be stronger with the same engine and a manual transmission. It will have a slightly lower weight, but probably not enough to make a noticeable difference. But there will be less power lost through the manual transmission and that could certainly be noticeable.

    Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
    V6 all the way, after owning a 2.7, I would never go back. Love having the power when I need it to get around a truck or quickly emerge onto a busy highway. Plus the gas mileage is pretty much the same as my old 2.7 so the V6 just makes more sense across the boards. Toyota 4 bangers are great engines though, just really lacking in power. Considering Honda makes 4 cylinders with over 200hp, I think Toyota can step up a little too.

    If u like the rugged look and feel of the Tacoma don't get te 4 banger. Yes they are a little more dependable in the long run, and you'll get a little bit better gas mileage, but as far as everything else goes.. They look kind of weak in my opinion. And don't listen to anyone that says the power difference isn't that big. their acceleration is subpar compared to the v6. My friend has an I4, I have the v6. I leave him in the dust off the line or rolling. Having ridden in both vehicles The suspension on the stock I4 also feels subpar to the stock v6. The I4 doesn't come in a double cab option, which is really nice to have unless you're really never going to be going on trips with friends or anything. There are also a lot more customization options out there for the v6. To put it back into perspective my friend told me when he bought his I4 "I love it cause it does everything I need it to" but after being around mine he regrets buying the I4 and is currently saving to buy a v6. It's personal preference of course. But if you're looking a Tacoma, I say go v6 for the full experience.

    My cousin had 2 early 70s Saab 96,made one good car out of them.The V4 could be pulled by hand,it was small.Parts were very hard to find.

    False, they do make double cab 4 bangers. Can only get them in 2WD but they are out there. Don't see them often, but every so often you come across one once in a blue moon. Not sure what you mean how the 4 banger looks weaker than the V6, can't tell what's under the hood by looking at the outside, look the same as any other Tacoma. The 5 lugs are the only Tacomas that may appear to be "weak" simply because they have tiny tires, low to the ground, and plusher suspension but all the 6 lugs look exactly the same. 4 bangers don't come with fog lights like the V6's do, but those can be added in a snap and they come prewired for them.
    I've had both engines and prefer my V6, but the 4 bangers are legendary engines. The current 4 banger is a distant cousin to the 22-R/22-RE and those two engines put Toyota on the map so you really can't hate on them too much.

    Very much kidding. I remember reading about the 919 in C&D a while ago. The energy recapture system is really innovative, seems like something that should go on every passenger car.
