is that good news then? Stability of status quo? or were the oil producers hoping for changes or fearful of NDP changes?

With all the raw sewage purposely being released into the ocean on both sides of the country it always makes me wonder if folks are just fighting oil & gas cause they have money instead of the environmental issues they claim.
The most heavily regulated industry in Canada...yup Oil & Gas and it is well respected around the world. I know from experience.

It's welcome news. The expectation was that the NDP would raise the royalty rates. It wasn't so much fear as mutual mistrust. The NDP rammed through a farm bill a few months ago that most industry analysts thought was to tough and abrupt so the stage was set for a similar discussion. Luckily the NDP actually listened to industry consultants, in partnership with ATB who came to the conclusion that current royalty rates are a fair compromise that allow for Alberta's oil to remain globally competitive without giving the resource away, in this case.

Do you think it would have less opposition if the product being shipped was refined rather than raw? Honest question.

Well ya. Everyone wants a disproportionately large piece of the pie. The argument that it simply can't be done safely is disingenuous and an insult to human ingenuity. They'll tout environmental concerns until there's enough money in it for them then suddenly those concerns go away.

Yeah, there is no excuse for dumping raw sewage of a municipal area into the ocean.

In the case of the proposals that send dilbit to the coast for transport by ocean tanker , the risk and consequences of an accident are disproportionately with us here versus the guy pumping it into the end of the line in Alberta . Not sure how anyone can't see that in this debate , and thats not pointed at you , I mean in general

The risk is the same to all of Canada. That's something that's being lost here though I completely understand the "it's in my back yard," mentality.

How exactly is the risk associated with the Trans Mountain expansion for example , the " same for all of Canada " ?

A major ecological diaster in the major western Canadian habour would have a very widespread impact. Not just for the view or the environment. Just because your drivers license was issued I'm BC shouldn't mean as much as being a part of Canada. While I can understand that a spill would ruin the local environment for local residents the fear of such an event cannot should not stop a project with major upside for the country unless it is technologically unfeasible to ensure a reasonable ecological impact. There is a way to get this done and I hope it gets done in a safe and friendly way rather than behind the scenes with piles of money changing hands and little done in the way to actually keep the project safe.

That doesn't really answer my question but OK

So correct me if I'm wrong but you seem to be saying all pipieline proposals are buildable and essentially all should be built because they all are a net gain for Canada as a whole .

So why bother with a case by case assessment of each project proposal then if the risks are " the same for all of Canada " ?

Every proposal is different , every proposal has its own challenges which is why each needs to be assessed on its own .

In case you missed it the last few times I posted it , with regard to the pipelines to the BC coast , the majority of the opposition revolves around the oil moving out by tanker not the terrestrial portion of the project , that and the fact that diluted bitumen sinks , making conventional clean up methods ineffective , a fact confirmed by a Canadian government study and a US government assessment following Enbridge's massive Kalamazoo River spill .

The NEB allowed Kinder Morgan to submit redacted reports on their capability and plan to mitigate and clean up a potential spill .

The current company in charge of oil spill clean up on the coast is interestingly owned by Kinder Morgan , and had difficulty and faced criticism for its response time in cleaning up a bunker oil spill inside Vancouver Harbour . That spill was not only small by comparison to an Aframax tanker , within1Km of shore right in Vancouver in calm weather , but it was bunker oil which floats and allows for conventional clean up techniques and not Dilbit , which sinks .

So currently there is not only no plan available that addresses their mitigation strategy , there is also no definition of their clean up capability , pair that with not being able to use conventional clean up methods on Dilbit and its not really hard to figure out why there is opposition to it .

Dropping the whole discussion to the level of " Quebecers are all corrupt mafia types " and " BC'ers are all Prius driving , protest junkies " is stupid .

BC's provincial government is pretty conservative and is not by it's nature anti industry , they're pro resource extraction , starting a massive LNG program , still approve cutting of 1000 year old trees , expanded raw log exports and just upped subsidies to the mining sector in the budget last week .

Presenting a complete proposal that addresses the concerns would likely garner a bit more support .
