We've actually got a local company that does that same thing, Lake Boone Ice Co.
    http://www.lakebooneice.com
They supply the ice to all the local companies, convenience stores, packies, restaurants with bags of ice.
I often wondered how a place like that could stay open these days till I started seeing their products all over the place.

Actually the story , ..... This ice house barn is above ground out in the open . Made from spruce , the walls are @ 12-18" thick ( 30 - 40 cm ) OZ
, the walls are filled with sawdust like insulation. The ice will last until September!! It's much smaller than the huge barns of when it was in operation over a century ago. This was an ongoing tradition , history lesson , hands on .... I got to do all of the steps involved. Very Cool live history lesson !!
Back in the day , trains would haul the ice to NYC, Philadelphia and everywhere in between.
The final cuts are made with large hand saws, great upper body workout! 3 months of doing that and you'll be looking like Shwartzeneger !
The reason you don't see many left is that all the timber was cut to build the barns. They became the highest point around , and a perfect release point for lightning..... Lightning , wood , sawdust .....= Wildfires o_O
The ice is raised up via elevator powered by horses.
There's a big one up in NY
If you ever get a chance to see one these , do it , you won't be sorry.
Locals or anyone can purchase a block by calling before pickup.
How cool would it be to have the pics n video, And the block at your 4th of July party chilling the Beer !

Thats pretty cool that they still do this, i’d like to for the history of it.

My mom grew up on a farm in little south of buffalo. she said sometimes they would cut ice out of the pound they had. That would have been in the 60’s maybe 70’s

Home made crank holding tool only took 220 ft lb of the 300 ft lb spec. Time to bust out the welder and beef it up!
