I am not sure about the rest of you but when I drive in slippery conditions or even just a bit of snow in 2wd, the back just fishtails back and forth, back and forth. I have lived in Montana a long time and driven a lot of different pickups and cars and never experienced anything like this. Is it something to do with the limited slip constantly transferring power from one wheel to the other?

Anyway just wanted to know if anyone else experiences anything like this. (oh and yes I know i could just put it in 4, but sometimes I like a challenge)

could be the tires. also, the toyota may be lighter than others youve driven so theres less weight and therefore less traction on the drive wheels.

ive got a 2004 4x2 and i fishtail all over the place in light rain. i cant wait to spend my first winter with it

I do have sand bags in the back. I guess I should have clarified, I am not looking for suggestions, just mostly want to know if anyone else has similar experiences.

make sure you put the sand bags inside of heavy duty trash bags because they will leak all over the place. try to secure them down if possible because if you get in a head on collision, the bags will continue moving forward. thats why you never use cinder block because those will come straight through the cab

Every morning I wake up and look outside hoping for snow so my drive to work is more fun. My wife thinks I am crazy.

I would send you some though if I could.

Funny you mention snow. We just had our first major snow last night here in bufalo. This was my first chance to test out my goodyear wrangler Duratracs. So at 5 a.m., i headed out. we had about 4-5 inches, streets were not plowed yet. First i did 2-hi. i got good traction as long as i didnt push hard on the gas. But of coarse i did purposly punch it around some corners. my first check of the traction control systems. got the beeping sound and everything. It appeared to really be helpful. Then went to 4-hi. The goodyear wrangler Duratracs performed wonderfully!!!! Had no problem going through the snow, slushy ruts in the road. Very impressed with the traction i had. Would definitly recommend these tires.

Bobcat - I was the same way this morning when i saw all the snow, my wife thinks i crazy to.

I'm running Michelin LTX A/T2's and I've had no problem with snow or compact yet. This is running in 2WD. If I try to get the back end to come loose I certainly can, however, when using "normal" winter driving techniques, traction hasn't been an issue. I also have no weight in the bed.

My experience is opposite to what you describe. My taco is better in the snow then my dodge dakota was. I assume its due to the double cab transferring more weight to the back wheels then the dakota (single cab) did. with good traction tires, I can get around in two wheel drive in my taco just fine. The dodge would sit and spin on a wet mouse turd.

Do you have a double cab or what?

Mine used to feel a bit squirmy on stock at20s (2wd in the snow not advised with them!!). Got snow tires now, n.p. in 2wd so far. I like to get it good to go in 2wd, so its that much better in 4wd, so far so good. I do use 4wd in the snow in general btw its just sensible. I added 2 bags of gravel now too, couldnt hurt, and if someone is stuck it'll provide traction.

Cheap traction w/o snow tires in cheap order:
air down to 28 or lower as u see fit , lower if you get stuck say 20
gravel bags/ sand & strap em in +keep fuel filled
    sipe the tires
carry chains,do this and you wont go fast, but youll get there. Have em , never used them though

    Just enough, and never enough
i have only had one problem in the snow so far i was going 15 on a small unplowed road late at night, needless to say i could not keep the back end down(even with a bed full of snow). so to answer the OP's ? yes i have had some problems but overall i would say its about as good as every other truck i've ever owned. i have bridgestone dueller h/ts btw nothing good.

Unplowed roads (as in fresh snow) can yeild good traction since it compacts under the tires into the tread. Hardpack on the other hand....

Mine isn't much different then any other that I have driven as long as I don't get aggressive with the skinny pedal or touch the brakes.
Those anti locks are are the worst piece of shit design I have ever seen
