Sorry, best years of 2nd gen are 2007, 2008 with a real mechanical limited diff.

 

I barely use my buttons, and I work the f#ck outta my truck.

me too, hence wanting the torque. one of my trailers is 2540#'s unloaded. It's not designed for stupid high weights, but it's pulled WAY beyond rated max several times without any issues of any type.

 

How dare you say the new Tacoma is inferior. Waiting for the newb turd gen members to chime in with rhetoric nonsense as usual.

 

Because like most Toyota products customers are lured by the assumed QDR and throw other options off the table, plus you have a whole fan base of Tacoma owners who were ready to move into the supposed latest and greatest, give it a year or two and 2nd gens will still fetch a pretty penny as many will prefer it to the 3rd gen. They are very similar but also different.

 

Some members have figured out how to put a radar detector up there. I'm sure you could make mounts for other things.

I like the first gen Tundra double cabs--I think they are the perfect size. Didn't go for one because a nice '05-'06 (with the 5-speed transmission and revised 4.7) would have cost me almost as much as my 2011 Tacoma at the time.

Probably made the right choice in the end since the DCLB Tacoma is pretty close in size to one of those and the weight to power with the 4.0 is probably better. I know mine feels peppier than the '04 and earlier 4.7 in a Tundra, haven't driven an '05 or '06.

 

My 2014 4.0 Tacoma is nowhere near as peppy as my 2006 4.7 Tundra. Both are great trucks though.

If you don't like it don't buy it! I also am a long time Toyota truck owner. Bought my first one when I was in the service in Guam in 1982. Some weird burnt orange color with a four banger and 3 speed MT. The 2016 is my 6th Toyota truck. It's all I have owned. I survived the great rust debacle of 1985. My trucks have always started and always got me where I needed to go. Saved me from sliding into the ocean during a blizzard. I have read the complaints. Maybe I am lucky but I have had no issues. I love driving the truck. Love the things they have changed. Love the engine. Hell give me more brace face grill and another 12 gears for my automatic to shift through. Again. You tried it and you didn't like it so you did the right thing and didn't buy it. Maybe I am wrong but I am thinking more people access this site than ever before so more complaints pop up. Issues with previous generations of Tacomas went unheard. Just MHO 3rd gen is the nicest Tacoma I have owned.

 

While looking into a new truck I extensively researched both. I decided I wanted either a 2013 and up or a 2016. The resale value for the 3rd gens were ridiculously high, to the point where it was more cost effective for me to get a new 2016 than a 2014 and up with low miles. I can't say Im a huge fan of the 3rd gen engine. I didn't like it when I first test drove it. It felt underpowered and the tranny couldn't make up its mind. Now with 6000 miles on my babe the transmission did learn my driving habits and it is much more pleasant to drive.I still hate trying to drive constant at 80 and over, It just doesn't want to go that fast. I really don't notice the supposed "lack of torque". Probably because I don't tow. I do however off road regularly and find the engine more than adequate. People really complaining about 1ib-ft of torque less? Even if the 3rg gen is around 300 pounds heavier it makes up for it in increased hp. People act as though the 4.0 engine was the best, but it only produced 236 hp for the size of the engine. Like most toyota engines it was very anemic. But If you are looking for power get another brand. Toyota was never known for its powerful engine. Toyota prefers less powerful sometimes antiquated engines for their reliability. I don't understand why anybody would think toyota would put a v8 in 2016 while the EPA is imposing fuel efficiency regulations. Yes I agree it would be awesome but it's unrealistic. Smaller engines have generallly been the trend the past few years. It suprises me that OP complains about the 16's lack of power after owning 2 Hi lux's. Power just not toyotas realm. I understand peoples frustration but Im sure if toyota completely rebuilt the tacoma, people would still hate it. I guess it's human nature to resist change. Also it sound like OP should look into getting a full size. New F-150?
