My wife and I just reserved a cabin up in Big Bear at the end of January and, after booking, found out that thats about peak snow season :D. Having a Prerunner, I know the roads will be a little more difficult to drive but dont really know what to expect on the roads. So, during the peak winter snow, are Big Bear roads icy? snowy? What should I expect? I know I'll need chains but should I putem on all four? [The owners manual says not to but other sources say its better] Any help is appreciated.

All you need to do is put a little weight in the bed and chains on the rear ONLY! I have a friend who has a GMC Sierra, and that's what she does. Except the chains, she rarely uses them...

PSHH youll be fine... you ever driven in the snow? Its cake. bring chains just in case and throw about 250lbs in the back by the tailgate. (sand bags or 2-3 bags of concrete) and dont lock the diff or youll fish tail all the way up. use the diff to start from a stop to get max traction. Other than that just be aware of the traction. if you do happen to get stuck alot of people just step on it and try to spin there way out theorizing theyll burn throught the snow...bad idea. as soon as the tires lose grip let off the gas a little till the tires "bite" and then ease back on the gas. The biggest mistake people make is flooring it. flooring it spins the tire and melts the snow turning it to ice under your wheels. Youve got good tires, take it easy and use your head youll be fine with 2x

Ice does suck. but take it easy and youll be fine, especially with chains, but ive never used them... If you get stuck the sand you used for weight doubles as traction aid. just throw some one the snow/ice under your truck and itll give you a boost.

Lived in NY my hole life until may 09. we measure our snow in feet not inches lol. dont be afraid to find an empty area up there and do some controlled skids and donuts to get used to the way the vehicle reacts on snow.

If all else fails text me ill come pull you out :)

Plus CalTrans/CHP won't let u up the mountain without them. It would be a good thing to try to put them on-for practice. Usually they keep the roads pretty clear. So there can be ice as for snow that will only happen if you are going up there during a storm.

It gets pretty damn nasty up there when it storms. Chains will be required no matter what if there is a storm or if the roads are icy. Bring chains and you'll be fine. :D

I've been up there a few times in my truck with chains and have had no issues.

You will be fine in the snow. Big Bear isnt too bad to get around in in the snow. California law requires you to carry chains and sometimes put them on, four wheel drive or not. And i wanted to say that our trucks are almost identical! Same rims, lift is same hieght, same color, just that mine is 4x4 and sport longbed. PM me if you ever want to meet up! I live in Fresno and Kingsburg. I can pull you out too if you ever needed help!
