I'm glad you got it fixed. I think the difference may have been your changing traction as it moved in the ditch. The sand recovery in those videos isn't much for changing traction. I don't think it's doing much to keep each wheel turning at the same speed

Somehow the computer is sensing each tire's need to rotate in order to extract from the stuck and then rotating that tire at an independent rate to best extract the truck. Truly amazing technology.

the computer has no idea how you are stuck, it's just keeping all 4 wheels spinning at the same speed. They do not spin at independent rates; they all spin at the same speed under CC and MTS

Look again, and listen to him describe.
A-TRAC also controls wheel spin independently.
If it was just slow on all four, then there would be no "magic" in the system and it would be no different than not having it.

I know I've said it before but if your tranny overheated change in immediately.

my 2-cents: Crawl control is definitely worth it. I've used it now on 2 off-road trips. 4-Lo gets you up most of the hills fairly easy, but if you find yourself going up difficult terrain and 4-lo starts to slip, crawl control will save the day for you. Another way of looking at it is if your running stock or other A/T tires, Crawl Control will make up for the lack of grip in your tires.

I am still hoping for a detailed analysis by a TW member of each setting of Multi-Terrain and Crawl Control as to what is happening mechanically at the different settings on different surfaces.

Best easiest explanation I can give you is that Crawl control selectively activates and releases the brakes on each wheel in split seconds. When wheel spin is detected, that wheel will get the brake applied to it in a pulsating sequence. when the brake is engaged on the spinning wheel, the power to that wheel is transferred to the opposing wheel via differential. This allows the opposing wheel with traction get more power transferred to it allowing the truck to continue to move.

The crawl control settings are essentially different maps of brake application. You can have crawl set to low for steep inclines or declines or set to high for inclines or declines that are not steep but may have loose terrain. Its sounds backwards, but I found the brakes engage less frequently when Crawl is set to high.

MTS (multi-terrain select) works the same way except its not for crawling at low speeds. MTS is better suited for higher speeds while in 4LO. MTS has settings for mud, rock, snow, sand etc etc.

So Crawl and MTS are mutually exclusive

Each brake is controlled on each wheel independently. Each brake caliper or drum is manipulated to keep all 4 wheels turning at the same speed. The intention of CC and MTS is to keep EVERY WHEEL spinning at the SAME SPEED. The front differential does not mechanically lock, so keeping them spinning at the same speed requires CC or MTS. If you didn't have CC or MTS, or TRAC on other models, you would have open diffs and the wheel without traction would spin faster than the wheel with traction.

They are mutually exclusive as far as only being able to use one at any time. They are the same process and the same mechanical systems.

yes, they have individual buttons to turn them on. easy way to think about it is MTS for higher speeds in really low traction and crawl for very slow very low traction.

I believe its standard with TRD Off-Road 4x4 only. Not optional on anything else.

I just ordered a 2016 TRD Off Road today. I just wanted to make sure I ordered the right one. I'm new to Toyota and new to the Tacoma. Thank you.

Do you want a 4x4 Double Cab or a 4x2 Double Cab? Short Bed or Long Bed? Crawl Control and MTS only come on the 4x4.
