2nd cold start since having the fluid topped off. Experienced the same quick and solid change from R to D that I had yesterday. For now the major issue I had seems to have been resolved with the fluid top off which is similar to what others are reporting.

Would have been nice is Toyota has seen this issue coming and I and other didn't need to make a trip in for service but I am glad that WCT (dealership near me) stepped up and fixed it.

same issue with my truck. Sometimes when cold and backing out of garage it feels like the transmission slips for a couple seconds, then engages and surges a bit. Been driving Toyota trucks for 12 years and never experienced this. When the truck is "slipping" it will slowly move then engage. Dealer "checked it out" and says it's normal.

DO NOT TRUST THE DEALER THAT SAYS THE FLUID WAS FINE JUST BY HOOKING YOUR TRUCK TO THE COMPUTER . THEY MUST COMPLETE THE FULL CHECK

Watch out for dealers that say they cant reproduce the problem or its " NORMAL "
Did they really check your fluid ? did you watch them do it ? DID THEY CHECK IT PROPERLY ?
.There is no charge and they do not check on PDI. The dealer said that if you randomly go in and ask them to check your fluid without presenting issues they could charge. They CAN NOT charge you (set by Toyota Policies) if you go in under warranty with a concern. they have to check the fluid as part of the warranty troubleshooting process.
You go in and say there are issues with the transmission and the service manager sends the technician on a road test only to find that everything is considered " normal " after the tech comes back from the road test . With this said ,You have to find a way to get the technician to check the transmission fluid .
If it were my vehicle , I would tell the service manager that the truck slips once in a while going around corners and travelling uphills . Sometimes it takes a while for the truck to move in the morning when its cool .
These are all classic low on fluid symptoms . The technicians know this and the service manager knows this as well .
And don't think for 1 minute that dealerships don't know about this issue . We have been down this road with the 2nd gen trucks . You'd think Toyota would have incorporated more time to the dealerships to check the fluid when your truck was there .Dealerships know there is a chance these trucks are low , yet they send you on your way . Pitiful !
I hate dealerships as well . Haven't found a reliable dealership within a thousand miles of where I live and I make sure everyone I talk to knows it

I've got a DCLB TRD OR and they added 3/4 quart over a month ago. Better overall, but still has some lag in the mornings when it's cold and shifting from R to D. It's been in the 20s at night. Once it's warmed up, it seems to be just fine.

I do not own a 2016 , only trying to assist with the known low on fluid issue .
There are a couple variables that we dont know .
The guys that added their own fluid .....did they do it correctly ?
What would I try next ? perform a pressure test while the transmission is cold .This is something a dealer most likely will not deal with as they dont really deal with transmission internals . If you have an issue they cant figure out , they will call it " normal " or replace the transmission with a new one . They do not work on valve bodies other than possibly changing a faulty solenoid . The days of rebuilding transmissions at the dealership are long gone .
With this said , a pressure test in reverse while at cold idle should hold approx 80 psi
a pressure test in forward while at cold idle should hold approx 60 psi
a pressure test at stall speed while cold in reverse should hold 185 psi
a pressure test at stall speed while cold in forward should hold 185 psi
This is the next step in diagnosing the delay to drive or reverse

Exactly. Once its warmed up its perfect. It's just the cold start in the morning or whenever it's been sitting for hours

So now its wait till someone has a pressure test performed and post the results. I am very doubtful anyone will actually do it though

If I owned a 2016 I have no issues pressure testing the transmission but I would have to be experiencing the same delay after I knew the fluid was properly topped off .
With this said , there are only a few members who are still having the delay after the fluid was topped off and in my opinion , the trans is still low .
A few members are finding that they had to top off the fluid twice . Its a finicky transmission I tell ya !
Cant wait till tech pack comes out with a filler tube and level indicator stick for these critters .
Just a heads up . There is talk in the aftermarket about designing a fill tube .

I wonder if I need more fluid...The dealer topped mine off adding 1.5 qts I don't have the "shifting from R to D issue" mine occasionally gets stuck in 4th gear. Won't up shift when I Let off the gas it will stay at 3k rpms for 5-10 seconds with my foot completely off the gas. I'll probably end up taking it back to the dealer again and have them check the fluid again..... What a PITA this has been.

There is a reason why its not shifting out of fourth . Get them to scan the ecm for codes . The scanners these days are smart . You can actually record your test drive , then go back to the shop and verify the data .
Throttle position sensor and temp sensor come to mind but your best bet is having the scan done as its better than a guess .
I dont trust the scanners for fluid levels mind you .

Well, After topping the fluid my truck is still having the same lag from R to D when is Cold. I don't know what else to do but to leave the freaking truck like that. I guess it is normal for this tranny , if it breaks then we will see. I just can't believe that toyota has not addressed this somehow given that there are so many people with this issue. Now could it be that this is normal for this tranny?

I'd give them the "bullshit" card..... They all do not do this...!!!!... just the ones that are low on F'n fluid....
