holy crap!

I dont plan having my winch connected to the battery at all times due to crap like this.

I will only connect it to the battery when needed.

The leads are there tucked away. Figured i wont be using it much, and it wouldnt hurt me to connect to use it when i need to.

 

@mr optimist @Digiratus any pointers or critiques on the taped up soloneid idea? LOL.

I figured I should at least tape up the contacts also.

I would have to look at the pictures on a computer, but heat shrink or good electrical tape should do a good job... Obviously you would need a more serious solution if you went underwater a bunch b

 

i agree with the water part.

Id have to smother the contacts with die electric grease and keep them boxed up.

But if I have water up to where my battery is at, i think i would be worried about other stuff. lol

 

Being under hood, you are less exposed but I am not a fan of electrical tape. With time it gets scuzzy and never does seal out stuff very efficiently. Heat shrink wrap may be a little better but it seems like a sealed container is a better choice it there is room.

As for smiitybuilt contractors, if they are in fact the failure point, the contractor they use is not made by them. That contractor is common to many winches on the market.

The good news is that there are some options available to us. Check out the Albright DC88P contractor as one possible alternative.

I wonder if it comes with a wiring diagram or something so Id know what each terminal is.

 

I couldn't find anything easily but hopefully it will be obvious or there will something in the packaging.

None whatsoever.

You did it differently than I did, though. First, I used Loctite on the bolts securing the wires to the solenoid to ensure that the connections won't loosen up over time and short. I also wrapped the solenoid in thick plastic (~5mil) sheeting before wrapping in E-tape. I did that to prevent the adhesive on the tape from getting all over the solenoid, and also to provide a base layer of insulation. I wrapped the first layer of plastic in E-tape, then wrapped that in a second layer of plastic, then put another layer of E-tape on the whole thing. It would take a box cutter and some time to open mine up. Also, I used Scotch Super 88 (high quality) E-tape.

i am going to wrap up the contacts also.. so ill be pulling everything apart and do it over this weekend.

i have a blank switchblank coming in.. ill use that to mount the controller jack.

 

Ended up setting up the tent before the citrus meet.

Had a friend come over and help me load it up on the 4runner.

Wasn't too bad loading it up.

Threw it on the bed of the taco first, got inside of the taco bed and then swung it over to the top of the 4runner.
