Toyota forum Noobie with AT tranny question? Be kind....

I noticed that if I take my foot off the brake for a second at a traffic light on an incline, the truck will start to roll backwards and the brakes start self-activating Shouldn't the AT be capable of holding the truck in place? It sounds like the brakes are activating (clunking) ie. like in the crawl mode.

I am not a noobie driver, just not used to an AT where the vehicle will drift back as much when your foot is off the brakes. Is this normal on Toyota TRD Off Road With AT?

Your brakes aren't stopping the roll back. Your transmission is.

Don't mean to resurrect an old thread, but I was on an incline today in traffic, so that being said I wasn't really pushing the breaks but rather just steadily holding the gas, when it rolled back on me and made a very strange sound. It wasn't clear to me exactly wherw the sound came from and exaxtly what it sound like because my music was on but if I recall it aoundes more like gears grinding when I hit the gas as it was my turn tu roll through the stop sign. Any thoughts? Was it my break system making that sound or could it have been my tranny? Freaked me out I started apologizing to my truck. o_O

The noise is the ABS module applying the brakes to stop the truck from rolling backwards. It's perfectly normal. It does make a fair amount of noise, but there's nothing to worry about.

It's magic before they have self driving cars. Get used to it. Paying $500 for TPMS replacements on 5 wheels, the battery dies at 5-7 years in your tires., and $1k for a Google software update.

You will be able to go to work and not have to do anything but get car sick. It's an issue they haven't mentioned yet..

I know this was posted a while ago, but it took me a while to figure out so I'd figure I'd still respond. Hill start assist only kicks in if you went from park to drive without pressing the gas. At a traffic light where you are staying in drive the whole time, it's not going to engage.

When I stop on any hill (i.e red light, stop sign) and release the brakes my truck doesn't budge an inch. Feels like hill start assist to me..

What model do you have? If I stop on a hill and release the brakes, my automatic DCLBOR rolls back for a bit, makes some scary noises, and then eventually applies the brakes. I was worried something was wrong so I consulted the manual and page 267 had some useful info:

■Operating conditions of hill-start assist control
When the following four conditions are met, the hill-start assist control will
    operate:
●The shift lever is in a position other than P or N (when starting off forward/
    backward on an upward incline).
    ●The vehicle is stopped.
●The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
●The parking brake is not engaged.

■Automatic system cancelation of hill-start assist control
The hill-start assist control will turn off in any of the following situations:
●The shift lever is moved to P or N.
    ●The accelerator pedal is depressed.
    ●The parking brake is engaged.
●Approximately 2 seconds elapse after the brake pedal is released.

DCLB Sport Automatic. I press the brake fairly hard and let go and I stay put. No rolling back and have not experienced any scary noises....thankfully.
