What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Put on OEM inner and outer tie-rod ends, and lower ball joints. Total Chaos upper control arms. I think i'm done for at least a week or two.

 

Did some of the Logandale Trails the other weekend. Whered you guys go by in mesquite?

 

Well I lucked out, looks like cranking the nut on wayyyyy too fucking tight solved the problem. No need to buy line wrenches or hard lines now!

 

Did an oil change in the middle of doing the timing belt, much easier to get to the oil filter with the radiator, belts, and timing cover off.
Switched to full synthetic finally, ended up with valvoline full syn, been running the valoline semi-syn so I think i'l be happy with this.

 

What shackles are these? How much lift did they provide?

Installed a new Radiator in my 02 Double Cab. Didn't read the repair manual completely so I didn't know about removing the Grille to get at the four bolt on radiator support. Then installed new radiator but couldn't the the fan shroud to fit. New Radiat or was to short by 6" although the Part number was the one for the VIN took it out and back NAPA along with old radiator. took a little work but they found the correct one. Took one hour after I got back to intall it and fill it with coolant. While it was warming up cleaned up the garage and put everything away. Not bad for a 73 year old who hasn't really worked on a car since he retired other than a couple of brake jobs and oil changes. It took a little bit for things like using a ratchet in tight places and getting the old hand to work. We will see how good I am Friday when I tackle replacing the valve cover gaskets and Spark Plugs and wires. Project after that in new tires and windshield. Then the cosmetic stuff like either painting or Plasitic Diping the fender flares and front valance I must say I did enjoy it Got get it ready for Road Trip to Idaho in March to see the Grandkids. Oh forgot gotta do a brake job front and rear and probable replace the steering rack bushing, sway bar bushing and new Shocks. The truck has a 152k and has had very little done to it it's been almost bullet proof. After my son used this past year as work truck after his divorce it needs a little TLC He didn't tear it up or damage it kept it fairly clean and now new scratches or dents. Like to find a shell for it so the dogs can be in the bed. This is a great site and have learned a bunch of stuff and renewed my interest in working on my cars.

The tunnels actually run under the freeway, just a few miles north of Mesquite. The other tight trails were on the west end of the city. Not sure if there were any names but they were a blast to run

 

I can't remember the last time I saw a first gen single cab.

 

6" to short... Meaning in height wise? Because the radiator I have is shorter then my original and it works fine. I'm even running it with the 3.4. It helps with clearance in the front for the skids I have. Just letting you know would would of been fine with the shorter one. But good job either way

 

So here is what I ended up with on the rear bumper. I may move the hitch in the future but for now it doesn't get in my way. I don't rock crawl or do any serious wheeling in this truck as much as get firewood and drive it off road while hunting and fishing so I'm not needing the clearance some like. Thanks for all the tips. After looking at this vs my first design I'm happy.

 

Is anybody running the method double standard 15x10?

 

There are different height radiators, the standard auto trans radiator hands waaaaay down. I re mounted mine about 1.5" higher to add a bit of clearance and still have the same cooling ability.

Single cabs are rare, therefore cool. My neighbor has a 'step-side' version. Really cool.

 

This weekend I touched up my hood. The guy I bought the truck from ran a paving company, I suspect it spent a lot of time driving behind dump trucks, because the front of the hood had a bazillion little chips taken out of it. After about half a day with the touchup paint and clear coat, and a lot of wet sanding and rubbing compound it now looks...better. If you look at it from the side you can still see where the gloss is off and the texture is uneven, but just walking by in the parking lot you probably wouldn't even notice. Which is all I was shooting for. As I said to my wife, it no longer looks like it is covered in zits, now it just looks like it has acne scars.

I got my weatherpack connector kit from Amazon yesterday, so tonight I'm going to work on installing that on the electrical connections between the shell and the truck (right now it's just crimped together). The parts for the valve cover gaskets should be here on Thursday, so I'll be doing that on Saturday.

 

It reminds me of my old 88. I miss that truck
