I'm new to both tacoma world and to toyota.
I have done a fair amount of off roading but never had a winch I'm in the process of buying a 2016 DC OR MT..I know warn has been around for a very long time and I was thinking about getting the 16000 lb winch but thought I'd ask you guys which winch would work best

16000 is a whole lotta winch. I'd say stick with something in the 9500 lb range, but that's just me.
You could probably find it cheaper, but just as a reference the xd9500i has always served me well.

The reason I was thinking about getting the16000 lb winch is because I'm most often by my self and I want to play a but more then I have been able to before with out a winch but like I said I am new to winches and didn't want to get one that wasn't going to do the job

9000lb winch will do the job and you can add snatch block to increase the capacity

On another note dont go with shittybilt. I used my Smittybilt x20 10k winch and it didn't budge. I got stuck crossing a creek and I snatched to a rock in front of me and then hooked to myself. Didn't even budge. Before I got I stuck I tried winching out a 4 runner and he didn't budge either. I am now returning that garbage winch. Thinking about the warn m8000

8-9k rated winch is more than enough for a Tacoma. If you're so stuck that a 9000 lb winch run through a snatch block and back to the truck isn't enough all a larger winch will do is rip parts off of the truck. I've only ever used Warn and they've been pretty good to me, but I'm considering ComeUp when I get around to adding a winch to my current truck. It'll be a while so we'll see.

I had an XD9000i on my prior truck. 05 quad Cummings w/ 37s and I took that truck to places a winch was required if you wanted to sleep in your own bed. Had a few times I could have used more winch but I'd say it was plenty 90% of the time. Just my opinion but I'd say the M8000 is enough for a Tacoma the majority of the time, expecially if you use a block.

I agree, I just like to have a little more than I'll most likely need. The 9500i is a good combination of line speed and strength for most of what I do which is why I mentioned it.

I had a Superwinch Tigershark I bought at Notherntool. $350, got it for $300 with those $50coupons you get in mail. It was mounted to the ARB bumper on my beast diesel Land Rover and it pulled me out with ease on numerous occasions. I pulled out a giant 80's bronco swamp buggy that was door-deep in a hole without a snatch block. I think it was the Tigershark 9500. If I was going on expeditions, I would get a $1500 Warn. But for weekend wheeling, and using it couple times a year, the $300 Superwinch is just fine. I think I heard Toyota or maybe Nissan use them as OEM winches down under and Africa.

How stuck were you? I used to run a smittybilt 8k on my Jeep. (Jeep weighed 5400lbs) and it pulled me out of this mess. Ended up getting a smoking deal on a Warn m8000 so switched to that eventually, but the smitty now lives on a hitch mount with synthetic line to use around the farm.

Yeah I wasn't stuck that bad. Lol only my rear end was bad. It should have pulled me out like butter.

Can't go wrong with warn. Get synthetic rope too. Less likely to kill someone if it snaps!
