Haha! That line got them to manually check it on the first time. Hell, I was going to show them this thread if they argued with me on checking the level... Lets hope Toyota is reading this thread with a re-cal for the trans.

If the transmission still has a delay in reverse first thing in the morning , you guys are still low on fluid .
Start your truck , select reverse ...if it delays into reverse its a low fluid issue
Reverse is strictly a mechanical application meaning nothing electrical like the ecm controls it .
If the truck has a delay between reverse and forward when its cold there may be something an ecm calibration can do to fix it .
With this said , I am not sure if the new 2016 uses squawk control, the 2015 does .
Squawk control was developed to eliminate that horrible thud or lurch you get when you put the truck into drive .
When moving the selector lever from reverse to drive ( forward ) the ecm commands 2nd gear rather than 1st gear .
Rather than a completely mechanical application to drive , Toyota introduced squawk control to make diagnosing a low fluid condition just that much more difficult . There is a whole lot of valve body action going on when going from reverse to drive and a lot of transmission fluid is being re-directed
I dont want to over complicate this post . Until I see a repair manual for the AC60 , I am talking out of my @ss lol
Are any of you guys members of the toyota repair website ? I think the subscription is 20 bucks for a couple days .If you are keeping your truck , this is the best place to grab a repair manual . There are write ups on TW how to download all the info .
I need to download all the transmission info for the 2016

I have a TRD OR with tow package and I get the same thing when going from Reverse to Drive. The few second delay and then surging forward.

The thing I notice is that it happens more when it has set for 4 hours. Like before I go to lunch or when it is time to leave work. At home, after sitting all night, it barely ever happens. But this may have something to do with being parked on an incline at home.

You hit the nail on the head! After I serviced mine the reverse delay was gone. R to D still has a delay sometimes. I come to a complete stop then go into D the delay isn't there. You might be on to something.

Meh... I had my 2003 TRD OR Manual for 10 years in LA. Great truck but wore my left leg out on the clutch anytime I had to get in traffic. When I get the itch to drive a manual I fire up my 1968 GTO

I believe gear cruncher is on to something when he says dealer serviced transmissions are still under filled . In an earlier post I described how I added fluid and the tranny was overfilled because when I put it in gear it jumped hard into gear I then got underneath and kept draining two ounces at a time until it felt normal . I don't have the hesitation going into gear but sometimes only when cold it plays catch up going down a long driveway in reverse.

Yeah, I had a 2013 Taco w a 6 speed manual and loved it. Liked having total control over the tranny and I'm not a fan of the cost associated with an auto. Just a personal preference. I'll def go w a manual next time. For numerous reasons...

I brought my TRD OR with tow package to have the trans fluid checked and they are going to replace the drums and shoes to correct the shudder that I described. They still haven't checked the fluid level.

I can't believe so many people are having this issue and Toyota is not doing anything to resolve this issue. Unbelievable!!, don't hold your breath waiting for an upgrade on the transmission ECU, my .02 cents. Is there a sequence or something that we can do so the R to D does not happen that often? like putting the truck in N first or something like that?

Neutral doesn't work for me,I tried to back-up then stop for 3 seconds in Neutral then proceed, but same thing.

I think I should contact Jalopnik and let the know about this issue, and maybe then Toyota will take this serious

Try letting your truck come to a complete stop before going into drive. Seems to work for me. Keep us posted.

one of you guys who did the fluid check at home need to go back under the truck and overfill the trans by 1 quart as a test to see if this fixes the delay to forward
its not going to hurt the trans . i overfill by half to 3/4 all the time
you would be suprised how many manufacturers design a trans pan that doesnt
    hold enough oil

I thought overfilling the trans is actually worse than underfilling it?

I thought so too. Wouldn't a high fluid level lead to overheating? It is my understanding that the valve body would contact the fluid at all times and wouldn't allow it to cool properly. Heat kills slush boxes.

I'm still doubtful that a quart low fluid would cause this. The pump pickup is at the bottom of the pan where there is plenty fluid to submerge it, even on a cold trans. Adding a quart shouldn't raise the level by more than a half an inch. Go easy on me, I'm not a transmission tech, just thinking out loud.
