How do I put a DVD onto my Zune (same as an iPod). I need to rip the movie and put it onto the computer. There are several programs that do it but I don't want to pay for one.

Any free programs out there do it?

And it's not illegal because I already OWN the DVD. I just want to put it into a format compatible with my Zune.

I use a free program called DVD decrypter. It can burn almost 97% of the DVD's I want. Some Random Copywrited Cd's don't always work. Once the program is used the Dvd left on your computer is like 4-7GB.

I then use a free program called Videora which can process video files and convert them to different formats. I use it to put DVD files on my Ipod. They are then only like 500mb to 1.5gb in size, depending on resolution and other settings which you have control of.

Handbrake. I have it on my Mac.

They have it for PC as well but you have to do the copy protection a little differently.

Ok...so I'll try Handbrake tonight. Looks pretty cool and it's free!

What format does it put the movie into? What format should it be in to put on my 80gb Zune?

How large are the files? Size isn't too much of a concern because I have about 60gb left and only need room for about 5 movies.

you can tweak all that stuff. There are some "template" options like "iPod, iPhone, PSP, etc, there may be one for Zune. Poke around you will figure it out. Its pretty simple.

You can even set a max size. I set my max size to 1GB for a 2 hr movie, and it will figure out all the other settings.

Great! So HandBrake seems to have worked. I am in the process of ripping KingPin to put on my Zune.

I only see the option to put the movie into MP4...will HandBrake also put the video into a .WMV format? If not, how do I convert an MP4 to WMV?

    Thanks.

I think when I put Ironman on my Touch I used DVD2AVI and converted it to an .avi file and then was able to put it on my Touch through itunes.

Just want to follow-up and thank you for directing me to Handbrake. I used it last night and have already put 4 DVD's on my Zune. I had to install DVD43, which runs in the background and removes the copy protection on the DVD.

The movies take about 40 minutes to rip and only end up being about 600mb. I plan to put about 30 movies on there so I have my choice when I travel.

    I love this thing!

    DVD43 removes the copyright protection.

Handbrake then rips the DVD. Its a very clean combo. Once DVD43 is opened, it runs in the background. As soon as a DVD is put in the drive, the icon in the tray shows that DVD43 is working to remove the protection. Once removed, the icon changes color. Scroll over the icon and it will say "the DVD is ready to be ripped". Then you open Handbrake and begin the rip.

If you don't run DVD43, you may run into problems as the DVD is programmed to not allow ripping (copyright protection).

This thread is a win. I had the EXACT same question (want to rip the P90X dvds so I can watch on an iPod Touch at the gym) and couldn't find a way to rip them to iTunes.

    THANKS!
