Can you keep TRD struts/shocks with lift kit?

2015 TRD Double Cab, mostly pavement and no hauling. We just bough methods NV to replace the factory 16" that came on the TRD pkg. I have been lutking ever since I joined reading numerous posts about lifts. Looking at going up to 3". Have been looking at the Toytec tt3-05 which includes springs and aal. Can I reuse the TRD struts/shocks? Is the TRD suspension any better then the normal 4x4 suspension?

 

Not bad but don't spend $30,000 + on a new truck and put such a cheap lift on it Pavement Princess or not. Our leafs suck on the Tacoma's and a single AAL will not really do much and not last long either. Figure out your budget, needs and go from there. My 2015 Pavement Princess barely sees any leaves, and I have OME 887's on Bilstein 5100's with rear ICON 2.0 Shocks, and a rear ICON 1.5 inch 3 leaf Progressive AAL and new UCA's from Camburg which you will need new UCA's most likely if you are going the full 3 inches. And my lift to most people on here is eh a basic lift budget lift.

 

Oh but not sure if you can keep your stock struts with that kit. Give Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road a call and she will steer you in the right direction. The website is headstrongoffroad.com browse around but Marie is great and will help with all your needs.

 

I don't think you can use the OEM struts with longer springs. Headstrong has a 5100 kit for around $730 including shipping. I' m installing mine this weekend. Struts, rears, aal, and choice of springs, I went with 885's for 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches up front. Don't bother with the diff drop. Uca's are another $400+ but may not need them.

 

Thanks for the quick replies. I should have mentioned I bought the last 15 off the lot and the plan is to let the last three boys drive it until they get their own cars. One of them turns 16 next week so he gets it first. Already grabbed those Method wheels he wants for his birthday. Having a hard time stomaching spending $1200-1500 this.

 

Why would you mod a vehicle for a kid?
Let them pay for it all.

 

Or let em pay for the truck . I'm a senior in high school and you better believe I'm paying off this truck haha.

 

I am a very priviledged kid. Not like the worst of the worst but I grew up spoiled.

My dad has a BMW and a Porche he babies and mods (but like old man mods lol).

He would never, ever, ever, ever mod my truck for me. He'd laugh his ass off if I asked. My mom would slap me upside the head so hard I'd probably not remember who I was for a week.

I was a good kid too. I'm 24 and don't have a ticket to my name. my uncle gave two of my cousins his nice car. They both died in wrecks (alcohol was also involved).
With boys you gotta be careful. We're stupid a lot of the time with big machines that go VROOM lol.

 

I grew up on a farm. Money was tight. We (the kids) worked like adults as soon as we could. Mom and dad made certain we had safe, reliable vehicles. And that we had an opportunity to earn a few bucks. Dad would buy a new pick up every few years. When I was in high school, he bought the first 4wd on the farm, continued to drive his old truck, and let me drive the new 4wd. It was his way of keeping us interested in the farm. We by no means were "spoiled", but we didn't want for much. We just had to earn it. I begrudge NO ONE that has parents that get their kids decent stuff....It's up to that parent to make certain that kid appreciates what they get though.....

 

Thanks for the lesson kids. I grew up pretty poor. Worked two and three jobs. Joined the Marines and retired. Now own my own business. I have six children and have been married for 30 years. Can we get back to the topic?

My son has his birthday budget. He blew half that on the Methods. He is left with $700. Going to give Marie a call and see what is a package close to that.

Oh and spoiled would be paying somebody else to install it for him. We are going to do the install as a father son project. His hands will get dirty.

 

Why? You want to make sure it's done right. Plus professional installers may provide a warranty for 2-5 years. The alignment after such an upgrade is a royal pain. You usually need new cams. Install price covers that most times.

I've got a "kit" in transit from Headstrong right now that is about the best bang for the buck you can get. Bilstien 5100's on all 4 corners, choice of Old Man Emu coils (I'm doing 885's) struts assembled, 1/4" trim plate, Devers AAL (1-1/2" to 2") with free shipping, $733 to my door. That give about 2-1/2" front lift and just under 2" in the rear. That SHOULD allow proper front end alignment without new UCA's. Alignment on a Tacoma is not difficult for any competent shop. I don't know of the first shop that will warranty a lift for anything more than 90 days. And that's just labor. Personally, I'd MUCH rather do the install myself.

OBTW, not a "kid"....I've got GRANDkids old enough to drive now. I'll soon be helping my grand daughter with her first 4wd.....(Toyota 4Runner) The very best thing we can do is to be involved in the lives of our kids. And get THEM involved......

 

Ever think about a coil over kit for your truck? Toytec makes a nice one. I've had mine for 8 years and it's been very good. 3 inch lift adjustable and you use your TRD shocks. Cost is about $450? Just a thought. And, I don't know what is considered cheap, but it's been great off road.

 

I completely agree. I'm a senior in hs as well and I pay for everything on my truck. I work 35 hours a week at a machine shop to pay it all off. My truck is my hobby. And it makes me happy to know I pay for it. I'm proud that I can work for my stuff

 

Yeah man, it feels good to work hard and know that you are paying for it without help from your parents. I work 30-35 hours detailing cars

 

Me too, senior in high school. I pay for everything in my truck and work 35 hours a week at a grocery store, not the most fun job, but it pays for stuff so it's good. Everyone can say "oh that's daddy's money" just cause it's nice but I know I worked hard for it and I take super good care of it, haha.

Yea it is a really good feeling for sure.

 

Pavement princess or not, it's gonna ride like crap. Get a quality lift or adjustable coilovers. Or better yet, leave it stock for factory ride and safety factor for a new driver.

 

Keep your son away from Tacoma world. He will want everything. I know I do
