Like an idiot I took some friends advice and dropped my oil pan just to clean up make sure there isn't a lot of gunk on the oil pickup and such (I have like 250,000 miles on my truck) Well Tacomas don't have an oil pan gasket. Just RTV. So applied RTV, let it sit, put in oil. Leaks. Ordered a gasket. Still leaks. Tried just RTV. Still leaks and I just snapped a bolt for the oil pan. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Help me

Make sure both mating surfaces are clean, use a razor blade scraper to clean the oil pan and the block, apply RTV and bolt it up, torque to spec, and let it sit for 24 hours.

I cleaned the block and pan really good. Pretty much spotless. Any idea on the specs to torque it too or if there is a certain pattern to follow while torquing it down? I just put new RTV on and am waiting a day to put oil in.

Check bolt tightening patterns for tranny pans. Usually alternate from one side to other starting at corners in a x. Over tightening is biggest mistake. Tranny torque is in inch pounds not foot.

Yeah I alternated starting form the two nuts then alternating aides for the bolts. I probably just over tightened. Thanks a lot

I am not a fan of permatex, I use HondaBond for all my sealing needs.

    That is just wrong.

Get a tube of the Toyota FIPG ( Form In Place Gasket ). Make sure you go around each bolt hole.

Please go get yourself a bottle of hondabond from the Honda dealership, it's expensive like 20 dollars or so, but it'll seal that right up. It pretty much drys in under 1hr and seals extremely well. Nothing beats Hondabond, that permatex stuff is crap.

The thing about hondabond is, even with small amounts of oil on the surface, it'll still seal and bond to the surface. I use it on everything, it's like magic. Yes it's a Honda product but I've yet to find a product that'll beat it. You have to use it to be a believer.

When you torque down the bolts, or tighten them, go in a crisscross pattern to even out the pressure on the mating surface of the oil pan, just like how you would do it on your wheel lugs.

10mm head bolts are almost always 80 in/lbs on the 1GR. It could be less, but it wont be more.

If there is a silicone nipple on the tip of the bolt, you must remove it.

Make sure your bead is on the inside of all of the wholes.

biggest concern with liquid gaskets is over tightening and pushing all of the material out

Honda bond is seriously good stuff, it will seal any type of mating surface with the exception of Teflon coated glass lol

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys. I fixed it. Ended up just ordering a new pan and bolts from Toyota. Used the black permatex and its holding up pretty well.

So, was there any "gunk" in the pan?

    Lots baby!
I like the FPIG. I like to hand snug the bolts and let it set for an hour or two. Then torque down the bolts to spec.
