Crawl control worth it?

Are 'Crawl Control' and 'Multi Terrain Select' separate dials? Does one work without the other?

 

I forget they make a 2x4 OR...

 

Only one can be used at a time. They share the 5 position dial but there is an MTS button on one side and a CC button on the other side of the dial. The dial selects 1 to 5 and the button engages either

 

Thank you... So, you select the terrain you are going to cross and drive under your control at whatever speed... OR, you push the Crawl Control button and take your foot off the gas & brake, and just steer... yes?

I am curious as to how each level feels or acts in normal and Crawl modes.

Yes even the highest speed of Crawl Control is super slow, so its pretty much only good for really rough areas where you would need 4LO anyway

 

Well, I guess you can change the crawl speeds as needed? How many speed/ crawl choices are there?

 

5... you have everything from Dripping Sap slow, to Turtle Fast

Nice chatting with you smitty99... Maybe when I am back in the 'Zone' (my daughter is near Tucson) we can go four wheeling and see Crawl and Sap-1, Snail-2, Sloth-3, etc. in action!

How Does Crawl Control Work?

This fantastic new technology is designed to operate each of the wheels independently of each other any time you turn the system on. It takes over both the power being supplied to the wheels and the braking so that you can keep you mind on steering in the right direction. You can even take your foot off the brake or gas pedal and let your 2016 Toyota Tacoma take over.

The Crawl Control system collects a wealth of information from a number of sensors located at each of the wheels and elsewhere in the vehicle. This information is then routed to the ECU, which then collates it and used the results to send a series of commands to the connected components, allowing them to carry out their required tasks.

Among the sensors included in the system are wheel speed sensors at each wheel and a series of vehicle traction and stability sensors. The stability controls can also be used in conjunction with the Crawl System as both of these systems have been designed to control both the amount of power and braking supplied to each wheel independently, however they do so for a different reason.

The Crawl Control system uses information gathered from all of the different sensors to determine the perfect amount of power to be supplied to each wheel independently or to all of the wheels at the same time. It can also determine the best time to apply braking to the wheels when the system has been activated.

The article says that it can be used for up to 12 minutes? I used it for about a minute and it torched my rear brakes!

 

Apparently it doesn't work very well in Mud

 

I was on dry land, I haven't tried it in mud yet.

 

It damaged your brakes? I didn't realize there was a time limit on using it.

 

It says in the manual that it will quit before the brakes over heat. I assume the front calipers may have a temp sensor on them.

 

You should be asking about how it sounds. It sounds like the thing is going to blow up or fall apart. The electric brake booster is hella loud.

The 5 positions of CC are for 1mph, 2mph, 3mph, 4mph, 5mph. MTS has 5 positions and the setting for each displays on the MID between the gauges on the dash. These are rock, mud, sand, etc. I don't know them or the order from memory, but they come up as your turn the dial between positions.

CC and MTS are only available in 4LO. You cannot use them in any other drive mode. They also work in reverse

 

Yes, it damaged the brakes. My drums were heated up to much and warped. I noticed the brake pedal pulsating the next time that I drove it. I took it into Toyota and they confirmed it. They resurfaced the drums and now everything is back to normal.

I didn't realize there was a time limit either. I did some research and the number I keep reading is 12 minutes. I did read, in the manual, that they could overheat with extended use, but I don't believe that it states a time frame. I used mine for about a minute or two, with no movement from the truck whatsoever. The tranny temp light came on and I shut it down. When I tried again, I engaged the CC and worked the tires side to side and drive and reverse, this made the difference and CC made it out. It's interesting to me that my discs were fine, but the drums overheated. Toyota should have gone with discs all the way around.

 

I'm fine with the drums in the rear. They hardly do anything on the highway and streets and they are safer off road.
