Ipod - Into a 2008 Tacoma

Hi all,

I just bought a 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport and I really want to be able to listen to my ipod in the car. Whats the best way for me to do that? I have had the fm transmitters in the past and they are not good...too much static.

Does Toyota sell factory stereo's that have an ipod connection? What about aftermarket parts, what works best with a tacoma?

I forgot to mention it has a JBL system in it...will that matter? Are the aftermarket interfaces difficult to install?

Yup it will work, item #581PA15TOY. Its really easy to install, all you have to do is pop out the a/c controls from the dash, remove 4 screws holding the headunit in place, pull the head unit out, plug the interface in the back (the instructions show you where, you can't screw it up), run your ipod cable where you want it (I used the tray to the right of the steering column, it pops out, drill a hole in the back and fish the cord through the dash), stick the small interface box to the inside of the dash, and reassemble, it only took me like 30 min.

edit: If you want to use the schoshe, I think you can find it a lot cheaper than that Sears price, but I personally recommend the USA-Spec just cause I know it works great.

 

I also recommend the USA-Spec PA15-TOY. I found this write up on the install. I have 2008 Off Road w/ JBL. Had no problems, install was quick and easy.

$140 head unit?

Not that I've ever priced head units - but that sounds like a pretty lame head unit for $140.

The USA spec unit is about $140.

 

i got my head unit for 300 but i really dont think i would shell out 140 just for ipod connection just my .02

 

everyone is right.. i made the mistake of buying a roughly 130 dollar ish mp3 adapter/kit which made sense 2 years ago when HU's didn't really have all the built in fancy shmancy stuff..you can get a really nice headunit for 180ish to 220ish that has built in bluetooth..mp3/ipod connections etc that are specifically designed for a usb connection.

 

well i mean if he is every going upgrade speaker/sub. i paid 200 for my alpine that works great. so he doesnt waste 140 in the long run, also spending a little extra cash could give him better sound on his stock equipment too.

 

I have the exact same as Chris4X4...PA15-TOY with the cable coming out of the storage area (cubby) to the left of the radio. Seems to work well.

 

Pioneer makes a HU that plays cds, radio, usb, and ipod for about $110 and it works great.

 

Um...my stock audio setup came with an AUX input....didn't anyone else's?

Anyway if you want to replace the HU, I've got this as the receiver in my other car:

And it works a charm. Obviously not expensive at all. iPod can be controlled from the HU, charges the Pod while connected. I'm probably gonna go with some touchscreen fancy-schmancy HU when the audio gets redone in the truck, but I'm going to wear out those factory speakers first. I paid for them, dammit.

Yeah, me too. I just use that for the moment.

 

i have a great interface in my 2008. i hooks into the back of the head unit, and you still have full contol of the ipod. kind of expensive, but worth it. i have never had a cd in my player.
