There are not "manufacturing issues plaguing this new Tacoma". There are a few folks reporting what mostly seem to be one-off issues that Toyota seems to be jumping on very quickly to fix. The one issue I have seen that has affected more than a couple of trucks is the whistling noise, and that is not a "manufacturing issue" at all. I know you really want to create this narrative of a bunch of widespread problems, but there are not a bunch, and they are not widespread..

The issue isn't the brand, it is where it is built and assembled. What Toyota's rep was built on came on ships from across the pond. No one is getting any vehicles that have "J" as the first character of the VIN anymore. Almost all have 2,3 or 5 as the first digit indicating Canada, USA or Mexico plants. Only models built in Japan since 2013 are the Yaris, FJ Cruiser, Prius and Land Cruiser. Could that be why the rest are having same symptoms as all the other brands? Sure there are exceptions but it sure seems to be playing out that way. Read into it whatever you will.........I've had a Toyota of some sort since early 70s and never any silliness with one that had a "J" VIN...and if any had an issue the dealer never said "That is normal" BS, they fixed shit real fast without any fight. That might have = twice on bunches my family has had. I know, it's a different world but we're clingin to a rep that is more historical than current.

While there will always be some type of assembly problems anywhere a vehicle is manufactures that's not fully it. Assembly is assembly. If the parts are shit and failing it's not an assembly issue. Sure quality control in the USA isn't as strict as maybe in Japan, but most of toyotas parts are manufactured oversees still I believe. If that's the case then you can blame assembly. Even the hood issue, that's not assembly's fault. And the adhesive might have been satisfactory when it left the factory, even if it wasn't that's a quality control issue and nothing to do with the person working on the assembly line. Hell those hoods might even be stamped and built in a different factory, and sent to main plant on the assembly line. Tons of variables. Plus the first few weeks of production on a new vehicle their is always going to be quarks. Always takes a little bit for everyone to get acclimated and on the same page. So during that time their will always be a few mistakes.

As far as parts go the supplier is responsible for testing their own stuff. Depending on the type of part it may be required to test the function/durability of each part, or maybe only as little as 1 per batch. Toyota has specs that each part much conform to, as do all auto companies. Any part can fail at any given time, that's just part of life. With stricter fuel standards and stuff cars and truck need to be lighter. More and more plastics are introduced, some materials are strong but metals may be stronger or last longer, but they can't incorporate them. Just stuff consumers need to understand. Even different plastics used in the automotive industry have changed a lot of the past 10 years. Technology has advanced and your able to see how stuff handles the rest of time. Weather, extreme temp changes ect have all lead to changes and will only continue to

It's a imperfect world. Shit breaks, shit happens. It's not the end of the world

No one said end of world, there are always fixes. I know what I have seen and experienced. Also said read into it what you will. Doesn't change what's going on. Sure, some of the stuff is made overseas and those parts probably aren't the ones failing...as much. Just for example...frames made by Dana corp made in japan? Nope. Big fail point for multiple gens for many yrs now. Where are the shitty leafs that have plagued 2 gens since 2005 from? We can try to talk around the fact that shit is simply not made to last like it used to be, from manufacturing or assembly standpoint but it doesn't change what's behind business models. Longevity of any product does not keep the capitalism beast fed and that subliminal non-published mantra is what drives stuff. All about keepin the cash flow happenin. Just sayin........

You are correct, nothing is "made" like it used to. They use cheaper materials and cut costs where possible. With so many vehicles on the now a days they expect more accidents and a higher and faster turnover rate. Especially with so many people leasing. They don't want parts to last forever. I'm not so sure a Japanese frame would have been any better. A lot of metal now a days is crap. Especially the crap from China. Which is more than likely where Japan would of imported the metal or frames from (guessing).

I have worked for two Tier 1 Japanese suppliers in the Automotive industry for the past 29 years as a Senior Engineer and a Department Manager and I can tell you that T@co-Pr3runn3R is right. Toyota and Honda where the most demanding customers that we had and quality along with customer satisfaction is top priority with them. Six Sigma is SOP with these two and every effort to correct any issue will be performed to correct them. Each and every process in final and sub assemble has a Operating Instruction to it and 70% of the assemble is Automated. I have visited both of their plants in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana and although 98% of the employees are American (They call them Associate Team members) there is a core of Japanese that monitor and intervene if production Quality or speed in PPM (Parts Per Million) target goals are not met or start to drift In fact some of the Camry's built at the Georgetown plant in Kentucky exceeded the quality standards over the ones built in Japan. Every New vehicle Launch can warble at some point but these two Manufactures truly take care of their customers as the Japanese say "In America the wife is King and in Japan Quality is King." If you want real problems go somewhere else to by you next truck or car.

IMO, Toyota built their rep way back when they had to crack the automotive market here and develop a market share to keep their business aspirations going. What better way than longer lasting, higher quality, higher mpg, cheaper to purchase and own products? They have their market share and manufacturing share in this country and there is no longer any point to their original business model that got them established here. Now they can afford the attitude they now have and not have to kiss any consumer ass is about where things are.

I love the way my girls' 2016 runner drives (motor/trans) MUCH better than my 2016 Tacoma honestly... but the gadgetry/technology bells & whistles and interior functions (such as head unit and nav) feel about 5 years outdated compared to the 2016 Tacoma. Curious what they'll change in them for 2017.

Good post Smitty and spot on IMO. Love the 4.0/5-speed in the current gen 5 runner, bullet proof combo. Tech is outdated compared to the taco. Comfort is better than taco. 2017 is probably the last year for the 4.0 in the runner, gen 6 will be getting the 3.5. Kinda playing the waiting game at this point....will compare both next year before I lower the boom, but for me, reliability trumps tech.
