1998 Taco Noob Questions

    Hello All-

    Searched the site for awhile and started to get blurry eyed and not finding what I'm looking for.

    First question:

    I have the ever cleverly designed center console/cup holder that has the 3.5" square by 1" deep cup holders that don't hold anything upright. I was told by a Toyota mechanic that I could easily swap out with a
    $74 2000-01 VersaTip Precision Butane Torch Portable Micro Torch Mini Welder
    2000-01, with the smaller and deeper round cup holders, as they have the same exact screw patterns as my '98. Can anyone confirm this or provide better advice on how to fix this weakness?

    Second question:

    I've found some good advice on painting my stock alloy 15" wheels on here. They are so beat to hell right now, that I think a cheap rattle can application would be just fine. Every write up I've seen says to take the weights off before painting. I ask, can't I just leave them on so they match the eggshell black I will eventually use? I just got brand new tires put on so it's going to be a while before they need to be balanced again (hopefully)

    Answer to the first question: Yes, the holes should be in the same place. My 1996 has a newer interior (either from a 00 or 01) and the holes are the same. So IMO, should still fit.

    2nd question: I suppose that's up to you, depending on how quality of a paint job you want. I guess.

    Thanks. Now I have to try and find a matching center console, but I'm stoked it should work.

    As for the wheels question, I want it to look good, as best as my amateur abilities will get me, but I was mostly wondering if it's a bad idea, for some reason, to paint the weights :notsure:

    I wouldn't see why it would be a bad idea. Maybe ask around to the members who have painted their wheels, but idk why it would be bad.

    i painted over mine when i did it way back when

    downside is youll have to do a touch up when you get them rebalanced

    you could maybe mark the tire where the weights go with some chalk and then replace the weights when youre done

    I don't mind the touch up. Honestly the wheels are so beat up now, that anything would be an improvement.
