What is taxed on a new car sale? Price - trade in or financed amount?

That's brutal. No wonder they don't allow you guys to carry weapons there.

Simply put the trade and down payment don't affect taxes in CA.

In CA you pay sales tax bases on the entire purchase price of a vehicle regardless of what you trade in. Additionally the sales tax is bases on the tax rate where the vehicle is registered, not sold.

I'm from Texas, grew up in Portland, now back in Texas. I can say that while it does take getting used to, I prefer the sales tax over the income tax for sure haha
