or is there supposed to be an additional piece that goes on top the metal for the battery to sit on?

My 2001 and 2004 Tacos have a plastic tray that the battery sits on / in. It's only held in place by a nub / stub that fits into a hole in the metal structure underneath.

The plastic part may not be OEM. Aftermarket batteries to be more universal can come with plastic trays to make up for height differences in varying applications.

I just replaced my OEM battery in my 2001 PreRunner this past weekend (8 years on that battery, no complaints) and it had a stock plastic tray under it which fit into a couple of holes in the metal below.

POS is on the engine side. I know because I had to jump mine today. For the passed 2 weeks I noticed it wasn't cranking over fast, and was thinking it's time for a new battery. Today with the snow, and very cold temps, it wouldn't turn over fast enough to start the truck. I know it's just the battery because if it only sits for a few hours or less, it's fine. Over night or a full day of not running, it cranks very slow. That tells me the charging system is OK, just that my battery isn't holding a charge very long. I'll have to get one this week. I'll say that these new battery "Jump Boxes" are the best invention yet. I'm glad I have one. No more jumper cables and having to ask someone for a jump.

Nope. not now. There was a Tacoma at the junk yard, smashed in the driver front corner... So I bent the F ouf of the core support so i could get the busted battery off the tray. :D I had to use a heat gun to get the tray flat again. :D

It looks like you already got some answers, but my battery died just yesterday and I got a new one in today. I looked for you, and there's a metal plate attached to the fender. Then, there's a plastic plate that sits in some holes in the metal plate. Mine's been cranking slow in the morning for awhile and yesterday it went rrr...rrr...rrr clickclickclick... damn. I got one of those jumper boxes too, it's sweet. Anyway,

Here's the view of the battery from the front of the truck

    2009-12-07153653_1041edcc4111d4f12ff30289a785779fc3c2ba25.jpg

Here's the metal plate without the plastic plate in (it fits into the holes you see.) The front bumper is towards the left

    2009-12-07153710_41da13c14c6e41705090bfbfe59e2a3ca8c9bc35.jpg

    Here's the plastic plate installed

    2009-12-07153635_cbdf05b9cfd5207c9d84c01b0181a417b296f94e.jpg

It looks to me like the plastic plate would catch anything that leaks out. Hope this helps!
