I just talked with a moto guy I know and he has a friend selling an '03(?) DRZ-E with a street kit, about 4K miles. Let me know if that's interesting and I can get more info.

I might be coming home with a 2t KTM next weekend, but I'll let you know. Thanks man!

That 690R though.... I think that would be the ultimate all around bike. The 990 is too much power for most people, at 80 mph in 4th gear I can spin the tire on wet pavement, roost gravel, etc and keep the tire spinning through 110 mph when I shift into 6th gear and roll on it up to 140. Most people don't need that kind of woopow. The 690R however, would be just about right for highway/backroad bike, yet light enough to run single track on...

Maybe not a good first bike, but it's a nice one. Dakota you will have a hoot on a light KTM 2 stroke. You just can't beat the power to weight ratio, and you can load it in the taco by yourself!

The 690 is still heavy if you're talking single track. Picking it up would wear you down quickly. It's also not as agile as a proper woods bike, but a great machine otherwise.

I have an 1190 and it eats forest roads all day long. Single track on it is doable, but serious exercise.

No doubt, but if you could only have one bike... the 690R would do it all. I love my 990, and I ride with guys on 250 two strokes and 450 thumpers all the time but like you said it wears you out!

    That's insane! But yes I know I will :D
So excited! Especially since it's just gonna be used on all the trails around eburg. 2005 KTM EXC 250 w/ low hours. I may upgrade to a 4 stroke in a year or two or may not, but I think it'll be good to cut my teeth on a 2 stroke. Kids these days don't even know what 2 strokes are smh

The DRZ seller is selling because he bought/is buying a 690.

I've done some access roads and muddy FS roads, and I only mean some. I have stupidly been on a single track once and regretted it immensely due to my poor skills. Looking back I'm glad my bike only weighs 330 lbs.
as a result, I can't speak authoritatively on the big bike vs. small (250) debate, other than two things that stick in my mind
    1. My WRR has never given me regrets. I might cap out at 70 when the wind is against me, but it always feels like a competent, determined little rascal every day. I've been on 4 hour road trips and loved the whole ride.
    2. I read a review by a guy who had a WR450 and a WRR. he said that on open areas and bigger tracks were great for the 450, but the 250 became so much more likeable on the tighter trails because of the nimbleness, and that it was far more fun to rap out a small bike than putt on a large bike.

Eh, see my Build Thread sig link. Too many mods to list.
I think it'd be fun to have a motorcycle and be be able to ride off-road trails.

On the other hand, I really have no desire to get in an accident, become a paraplegic, and not be able to hold my cats any longer. Because that's how my life rolls. Maybe I need a bigger truck. Safety first.

I used to have a WR250R. I miss that little bike. Having said that, it was a bit underpowered for its (and my) weight. I think a 350 could be the sweet spot between grunt and handling.

It was my understanding that the wr250r was designed more for the street where as the wr250f was a more powerful, true trail bike. Right?

Yeah, for sure, they have two completely different engines. The WRR basically has 1/4th of the R1 engine, so much longer maintenance interval at a cost of power output. It's also chunkier all around with less capable suspension. But I rode it on I-90 many times and it did 70mph on knobbies without a problem after hours in the dirt. I kinda wish I hadn't sold it, honestly.

Skip the 2 and go 4! It's like tits... If 2 is good, 4's gotta be better! That is, unless you like shifting.......:bikewhoops:

Pfft. My half liter thumper eater disagrees with you. 93 CR500R with some porting...only 91HP at the wheel.

No no, I mean 2 stroke vs 4 stroke! Yeah, 2 stroke will smoke the same volume 4 stroke with an experienced rider, but for pure fun value for a relatively new rider, 4 all the way! Also, great video! Obviously you are pretty experienced!

My first mans bike was a 1976 Yamaha DT360 two stroke when I was 12. It would do 90mph on gravel road, and I have the scars (and tickets!) to prove it. At 14, I traded up to a YZ490 two stroke I had to stand on a block of wood to mount, and over the years have always had some sort of big bore smoker in the shed, although I did the sportbike thing for a while in Germany (autobahn, Nuerburgring, how can you not?). Point is, a 250 two stroke is a perfectly reasonable first bike for anyone tall enough to touch with one foot. The KTM's are pretty smooth, they aren't like the old KX's and CR's of the 80's.
